Overview of the organization
The Leprosy Mission International Ethiopia (TLMI-E) is an international non-governmental organization registered with civil society organization’s proclamation number 3097. TLMIE has been implementing different projects across the country in partnership with national stakeholders like associations with persons affected by leprosy, ministry of health, ministry of women and social affairs, Ethiopian center for disability and development (ECDD) and other international development partners to support and strengthening the national leprosy program and services.
Currently TLMI-E is engaged active case detection project in east Gojjam, Ethiopia called Dare to Dream, a consortium project known as We are Able intended to improve the livelihoods and food security of persons affected by leprosy in Addis Ababa and East Harerge. Furthermore, TLMI-E conducting operational research projects in collaboration with national and international Experts.
Overview of the project
The Dare to Dream (D2D) project aims to pilot an integrated leprosy control model in Ethiopia through health system strengthening and community ownership, building on lessons from the CLRS initiative and aligned with national leprosy strategies, NTD roadmaps, and global leprosy guidelines. D2D project seeks to prevent leprosy transmission in Ethiopia by strengthening the health system to be able to effectively find, diagnose, treat and manage complications of leprosy promptly, especially among rural women and children.
The project was implemented in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health-NTP and ALERT Hospital to pilot a new, integrated, and comprehensive model for leprosy control in rural hot spots in selected four woredas (Debay Tlatgen, Enarg Enawga, Enemay and Shebel Berenta woredas) in East Gojam Zone of Amhara Region. It trained and equipped healthcare providers at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels with the required skills, tools, and resources to accurately diagnose, treat, refer, and manage leprosy and disability complications.
The project strengthened the health systems by investing in innovative technology, virtual consultations, close monitoring & supervision structures, and robust information management systems. Along with the health workers, the project also engaged and trained key community stakeholders, including persons affected by leprosy, their local associations, faith leaders, and other community-based organisations to play an active role in the early detection of leprosy cases, ensuring compliance to treatment, promoting community and family-based self-care to prevent disabilities, and reducing stigma and discrimination against people affected by leprosy and disabilities.
The project was designed to follow the World Health Organization’s (WHO) approach and align with The Leprosy Mission Global Fellowship’s Strategy, working towards zero transmission, zero discrimination, and zero disability. TLMI-E implemented it in partnership with the MoH, ALERT Hospital, OPALs, and other local and national actors.
