Mission and objectives

UNOCHA is part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partner-ship with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

UNOCHA’s core functions are coordination, information management, policy, advocacy, and humanitarian financing. OCHA has been operational in Ethiopia for several years and its current humanitarian operations are focused on addressing the lifesaving needs of people affected by 3 main crises: the conflict in the North, the drought in the East and South, as well as those displaced by violence in the center and South. UNOCHA operates out of the main office in Addis Ababa and sub offices in several regions in Ethiopia, close to the affected people. This position will be based in the Planning and Coordination Unit to support all parts of the humanitarian programme cycle.

Context

Ethiopia is faced with multiple, complex humanitarian crises. In its role as the lead coordinator of humanitarian action and advocate for the broader humanitarian system, OCHA is intensifying efforts to raise the visibility of the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia and engage new audiences. To support this critical work, external expertise in graphic design and social media is urgently needed to enhance communication and advocacy efforts.

Task description

We are looking for one (1) Online Volunteer who under the guidance of the Head of the Strategic Communications Unit and in close collaboration with the team will support the digital communications and visibility efforts of the OCHA and its humanitarian partners through the design and production of multimedia assets for social media and digital platforms:

– Design visually engaging content for social media, including static graphics, carousels, infographics, and short videos.

– Adapt existing materials to various platforms (Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.).

– Ensure all designs follow UN branding guidelines and accessibility standards.

– Support with editing and repurposing existing photo/video material for social media use.

– Provide creative input on improving visual storytelling and engagement.

Assignment requirements

Required experience

– Proven track record in social media content design and creation.

– Proficiency in tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro) or similar.

– Strong portfolio demonstrating experience in social media content design.

– Comfortable working remotely and independently

– Creative, proactive, and deadline oriented

A degree in Communications or Graphic Design is considered an asset.
