Job Description

Job Purpose

The Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and reviewing structural systems to ensure that buildings and other structures are safe, stable, durable, and compliant with applicable codes and standards, including roads and water-related structures. The role supports project delivery from concept design through construction by providing technical solutions, preparing structural calculations and drawings, and coordinating with other disciplines and stakeholders.

Structural Design

  • Design and analyse structural systems for buildings, roads, bridges, and water-related structures.
  • Prepare structural calculations, design reports, specifications, and construction drawings.
  • Develop safe, economical, and efficient structural solutions that comply with project requirements

Technical Review and Analysis

  • Review structural designs, calculations, and drawings for accuracy and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Conduct structural assessments and feasibility studies for new and existing structures.
  • Recommend design improvements and value engineering solutions where appropriate.

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate with architects, civil, geotechnical, MEP, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Participate in design coordination meetings and resolve technical issues with project stakeholders
  • Ensure structural designs are fully integrated with other project components

Construction Support

  • Provide technical support during construction and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs).
  • Review shop drawings, material submittals, and method statements.
  • Resolve structural issues encountered during construction.

Site Inspection and Quality Assurance

  • Conduct site inspections to verify that construction complies with approved drawings and specifications.
  • Identify non-conforming work and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Prepare technical reports, structural calculations, and engineering documentation.
  • Maintain accurate records of design revisions, approvals, and project correspondence.
  • Assist in preparing project progress reports.

Compliance and Standards

  • Ensure all structural designs comply with applicable building codes, engineering standards, and client requirements.
  • Stay up to date with changes in structural engineering practices, codes, and regulations.

Project Management Support

  • Assist in planning structural engineering activities and meeting project schedules.
  • Support cost estimation and resource planning related to structural works.
  • Monitor the timely delivery of structural engineering outputs.

Professional Development

  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and technical staff.
  • Participate in professional training and continuous learning activities.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform any other structural engineering duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Qualification and Skills

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree/Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of direct experience related to the job title in the construction industry

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, analysis, and design for buildings, roads, bridges, and water-related structures.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design software such as ETABS, SAP2000, SAFE, STAAD. Ro, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D, Eagle point.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable engineering codes, standards, regulations, and construction practices.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to prepare and review structural calculations, engineering drawings, technical specifications, and reports.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and coordination skills to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Good project planning, time management, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and familiarity with project management and document control systems.
