The starting monthly salary for this position is $575 (USD).

About the role:

To safely conduct Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), spot tasks, Battle Area Clearance (BAC), Explosive Ordnance search, identification, excavation, and support to disposal operations under the supervision of the EOD Team Leader, in accordance with MAG Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Ethiopian National Mine Action Standards (NMAS), International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), and MAG safety requirements.

The EOD Operator contributes to the safe release of EO hazards and supports humanitarian access by locating, investigating, and assisting in the disposal of explosive ordnance while maintaining the highest standards of safety, discipline, and operational effectiveness. The post holder will report to the EOD Team Leader.

Job Purpose

To safely conduct Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), spot tasks, Battle Area Clearance (BAC), Explosive Ordnance search, identification, excavation, and support to disposal operations under the supervision of the EOD Team Leader, in accordance with MAG Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Ethiopian National Mine Action Standards (NMAS), International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), and MAG safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Duties
  • Conduct safe and effective EOD and spot task operations as directed by the EOD Team Leader.
  • Conduct Battle Area Clearance (BAC) operations in accordance with MAG SOPs and EMAS.
  • Conduct technical search for explosive ordnance using approved drills, procedures and equipment.
  • Locate, expose and identify explosive ordnance following approved excavation procedures.
  • Prepare explosive ordnance for disposal by qualified personnel in accordance with MAG SOPs.
  • Assist the EOD Team Leader during demolition and disposal operations.
  • Establish and maintain safe working lanes, safety distances and demolition sites as instructed.
  • Carry out evidence-based search and clearance activities to support humanitarian access and land release.
  • Assist with marking hazardous areas and implementing appropriate safety measures.
  • Immediately stop work and report any unsafe conditions, unexpected hazards or incidents.
  • Ensure all operational activities comply with MAG SOPs, NMAS, IMAS and task-specific risk assessments.
Safety and Security
  • Take responsibility for personal safety and the safety of colleagues at all times.
  • Correctly use all issued Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Participate fully in daily safety briefings, operational briefings and debriefings.
  • Immediately report incidents, accidents, near misses or unsafe acts.
  • Maintain constant situational awareness during operations.
  • Follow all MAG security procedures and journey management requirements.
Equipment Management
  • Maintain issued tools, detectors, PPE and other operational equipment in a clean and serviceable condition.
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections before and after operations.
  • Report damaged or defective equipment immediately.
  • Ensure all equipment is correctly stored and accounted for.
  • Report daily operational progress to the EOD Team Leader.
  • Record search and clearance activities accurately.
  • Report all explosive ordnance discoveries immediately.
  • Assist with completion of operational documentation as required.
Reporting

Teamwork

  • Follow all instructions issued by the EOD Team Leader.
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary operational team.
  • Maintain professional conduct and discipline during deployments.
  • Support new team members during training and mentoring.

Training and Development

  • Maintain operational accreditation and competency.
  • Participate in refresher training and operational assessments.
  • Attend all mandatory MAG training.
  • Continuously improve technical knowledge of explosive ordnance.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Completion of nationally recognised Deminer or EOD Level 1 training.
  • Eligible for NMAO operational accreditation.
  • Experience conducting EOD or BAC operations.
  • Good understanding of IMAS and NMAS.
  • Physically fit and medically suitable for operational field work.
  • Ability to work in remote and austere environments.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Commitment to safe working practices.
  • Team player with high standards of integrity.
  • Previous humanitarian mine action experience.
  • Experience conducting EOD spot tasks.
  • Experience with detector search techniques.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Basic English language skills.
