Job Purpose

The EOD Team Medic is responsible for ensuring the medical preparedness and emergency medical support of the EOD team during all operational activities. The Medic provides immediate trauma care, emergency medical response, casualty stabilization and coordinates casualty evacuation (CASEVAC/MEDEVAC) when required.

The Medic ensures that all medical equipment, trauma kits, ambulance/evacuation vehicle and medical documentation are maintained in accordance with MAG Medical Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Medical Treatment Protocols (MTPs), Ethiopian Mine Action Standards (EMAS), International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), and MAG Health and Safety policies.

The Medic also supports the operational readiness of the EOD team by promoting health, hygiene, preventative medicine and emergency preparedness.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Medical Support

• Maintain continuous medical support during all EOD and BAC operations.
• Remain immediately available to respond to any medical emergency throughout operational activities.
• Provide emergency trauma care and casualty stabilization.
• Conduct primary and secondary casualty assessments.
• Administer emergency treatment within the scope of training and MAG Medical SOPs.
• Prepare casualties for evacuation to higher-level medical facilities.
• Monitor casualties during transport.

2. Medical Preparedness

• Ensure all trauma kits, medical bags and emergency equipment are complete and operational before deployment.
• Conduct daily inspections of medical equipment.
• Ensure sufficient medical consumables are available.
• Monitor expiry dates and replace expired medications.
• Maintain accountability of all controlled medications.
• Ensure all medical equipment is correctly cleaned, stored and maintained.

3. CASEVAC / MEDEVAC

• Maintain readiness to implement MAG’s CASEVAC and MEDEVAC procedures.
• Ensure evacuation vehicles remain operational and immediately deployable.
• Verify evacuation routes before deployment.
• Maintain current contact details for referral hospitals and emergency services.
• Assist the EOD Team Leader during emergency response planning.
• Participate in CASEVAC rehearsals and drills.

4. Health Monitoring

• Monitor the health and fitness of team members.
• Provide first aid and treatment for routine illnesses and injuries.
• Advise staff on hydration, heat illness prevention and fatigue management.
• Promote hygiene and disease prevention.
• Monitor personnel for signs of operational stress or illness.

5. Operational Support

• Participate in daily operational briefings and debriefings.
• Advise the Team Leader on medical risks affecting operations.
• Support dynamic risk assessments from a medical perspective.
• Ensure casualty evacuation plans are understood by all personnel.
• Remain positioned to ensure rapid access to operational worksites while remaining outside hazardous areas.

6. Reporting

• Maintain accurate medical treatment records.
• Complete incident and casualty reports.
• Report medical incidents immediately to the EOD Team Leader.
• Notify the Country Medical Focal Point or Medical Coordinator of significant medical events.
• Maintain confidentiality of medical information.

7. Vehicle and Medical Equipment

Where assigned responsibility for the ambulance or evacuation vehicle, the Medic shall:

• Conduct daily vehicle inspections.
• Ensure the vehicle remains fully fuelled and operational.
• Verify emergency equipment is securely stored.
• Maintain vehicle cleanliness.
• Maintain vehicle logbooks.
• Report mechanical faults immediately.
• Ensure communications equipment remains operational.

8. Training

• Deliver basic first aid awareness to EOD team members.
• Participate in medical refresher training.
• Conduct casualty evacuation drills.
• Support operational medical exercises.
• Maintain personal clinical competency.

Person Specification

Essential

• Diploma or Degree in Nursing, Emergency Medicine, Paramedicine or equivalent recognised health qualification.
• Current professional registration with the appropriate Ethiopian regulatory authority.
• Minimum three years’ experience in emergency or trauma care.
• Experience supporting remote field operations.
• Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
• Good understanding of trauma management.
• Ability to work in austere and remote environments.
• Computer literacy (Word and Excel).
• Good written and spoken English.

Desirable

• Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent qualification.
• Previous experience supporting humanitarian mine action or EOD teams.
• Experience operating ambulances or emergency vehicles.
• Valid Ethiopian driving licence.
• Experience delivering first aid training.
• Knowledge of IMAS and EMAS medical requirements.

About MAG:

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

MAG is registered and accredited as a humanitarian mine action NGO in Ethiopia and is in the process of establishing a country office and operations focused on responding to the threat posed by explosive ordnance contamination in northern Ethiopia. Initial planned programming will focus on the delivery of Explosive Ordnance Risk Education, working with local partners, and capacity support to national actors. Further scale-up and expansion of activities to encompass survey and clearance operations is anticipated over the coming months.
