NETWORK OF ETHIOPIAN WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION(NEWA)
Background: The Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations (NEWA) is a non-partisan, non-governmental network organization established in 2003, and currently NEWA has 38-member local organizations and associations seeking to create a stronger advocacy voice for women’s advancement. NEWA has a twofold goal: synchronizing the individual activities of women’s associations into an integrated collective effort and synergy to realize their common aspirations for gender equality; and launching a vigorous public campaign of promotion, advocacy, and lobbying for women’s rights.
NEWA with financial support from the financial support from FCDO FECDO and in partnership with the African Women Peace and Security Institute (AWPSI) and African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) has been implementing a project, namely ‘Advancing Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) in Ethiopia. (2024-2027.
The project implements with the overall objective of to strengthen the localization and resilience of the Women’s Peace and Security (WPS) agenda in Ethiopia by empowering local actors, enhancing institutional capacities, and by contributing to fostering sustainable and inclusive peace processes that ensure the active meaningful participation and leadership of women in conflict its mitigation, prevention, transformative resolution, and post-conflict recovery over a three-year period.
Therefore, as part of the project plan NEWA intends to conduct a compressive assessment of the challenges and opportunities of the Women Peace and Security Agenda (WPS) in Ethiopia. This assessment will aim address the challenges, including recommendations for changes to improve the work of CSOs, local peace and security peace process and, mapping/ directory of WROs, policy brief to address the systemic factors hindering women’s participation.
