01. Temporary Afar Language Reviewer for ECMA ChatBot Project

Job Description

ECMA is seeking a Temporary Afar Language Reviewer to support the ECMA ChatBot project by reviewing Afar-language chatbot content for accuracy, clarity, consistency, and cultural appropriateness.

The reviewer will focus mainly on validating existing Afar translations against ECMA-approved sources and recommending clear corrections. Basic support to system testing or UAT may be required, but it is not a primary requirement.

Duration: Temporary assignment: 4–8 weeks

Key Responsibilities

Afar Language Review
  • Review Afar chatbot content, prompts, responses, FAQs, and user-facing messages for accuracy, clarity, tone, and consistency.
  • Validate Afar translations against ECMA-approved source materials and ensure the intended regulatory meaning is preserved.
  • Identify inaccurate, unclear, overly literal, or culturally inappropriate wording and recommend suitable alternatives.
  • Maintain consistent Afar terminology and style across chatbot channels.
Basic Testing Support
  • Support basic system testing or UAT activities where Afar language review is needed.
  • Check whether Afar chatbot responses are understandable, relevant, and aligned with approved content.
  • Report language-related issues clearly for correction and retesting.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Document translation and language-quality issues clearly, including examples and recommended corrections.
  • Share concise review findings and issue summaries with the project team.
  • Confirm that corrected Afar responses remain accurate and clear.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Native or near-native proficiency in Afar, with strong grammar, spelling, terminology, and cultural understanding.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Afar af language, linguistics, translation, communications, education, or a related field. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
  • 1-3 year relevant experience
  • Professional working proficiency in either Amharic or English to review source materials and document findings.
  • Previous experience reviewing Afar translations, localization outputs, public-facing content, or language-quality work.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify meaning, tone, terminology, and usability issues.
  • Ability to document review findings clearly and work with the project team to resolve issues.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Prior experience reviewing existing translations for digital platforms, websites, apps, chatbots, or public-service content.
  • Experience supporting system testing, UAT, or issue tracking is an advantage but not mandatory.
  • Knowledge of Afar dialects and regional language variations.
