Job Description

Job Summary

The Sustainability Team Leader will provide field-level leadership for sustainability, monitoring, and operations and maintenance activities at the assigned duty station. The position will lead and support field teams, coordinate with government and regional stakeholders, oversee assigned Sustainability Program Groups, and ensure effective planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of water service functionality, rehabilitation, water safety, and sustainability activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and support the sustainability field team in the assigned duty station.
  • Coordinate implementation of monitoring and operations and maintenance activities.
  • Provide oversight and technical follow-up to assigned Sustainability Program Groups and local service providers.
  • Ensure timely collection, review, validation, and use of water point functionality and service performance data.
  • Support assessment of water systems, identify maintenance and rehabilitation needs, and follow up on agreed corrective actions.
  • Prepare regular activity reports, progress updates, and field findings for the Programs Director.
  • Work closely with the Sustainability Coordinator for technical guidance, quality assurance, and learning.
  • Coordinate with regional, zonal, and woreda government offices and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Promote accountability, documentation, team learning, and compliance with WFG standards.

Water Safety Management Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate preparation, implementation, and regular updating of water safety management plans for assigned water supply systems.
  • Support identification, assessment, and mitigation of water quality and safety risks from source to point of use.
  • Coordinate routine sanitary inspections, water quality monitoring, and follow-up actions with woreda water offices, health offices, service providers, and community structures.
  • Ensure that risks related to source protection, treatment, storage, distribution, operation, and household handling are properly documented and addressed.
  • Follow up corrective actions for identified water safety risks, including minor repairs, cleaning, disinfection, drainage improvement, fencing, source protection, and user awareness activities.
  • Support training and coaching of field teams, service providers, water committees, and local stakeholders on water safety management and preventive risk control.
  • Prepare and submit regular updates on water safety status, risks, mitigation measures, and outstanding actions to the Programs Director and Sustainability Coordinator.

Location-Specific Responsibilities

  • Bahir Dar-based Sustainability Team Leader: Responsible for sustainability leadership in the assigned Amhara Region program areas, including rehabilitation of water points and full water safety management activities in the two assigned woredas. The position will represent WFG in Amhara Region, coordinate with regional government offices and other stakeholders, and ensure that water safety risks are identified, documented, mitigated, and reported.
  • Dodola-based Sustainability Team Leader: Responsible for sustainability leadership in the Dodola-based program area, including oversight of Kokosa and Dodola Sustainability Program Groups, field team coordination, monitoring, operations and maintenance follow-up, and support to water safety management activities where applicable.
  • Bensa-based Sustainability Team Leader: Responsible for sustainability leadership in the Bensa-based program area, including oversight of Bensa and Nensebo Sustainability Program Groups, field team coordination, monitoring, operations and maintenance follow-up, and support to water safety management activities where applicable.

Supervision and Coordination

  • Report administratively and operationally to the Programs Director based in Hawassa.
  • Receive technical guidance and support from the Sustainability Coordinator based at the Headquarters office in Addis Ababa.
  • Coordinate closely with regional, zonal, and woreda water offices, program teams, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Facilitate regular team meetings, field follow-up, technical reviews, and learning sessions.

LOCATION: Dodola and Benesa, Bahir Dar

SALARY: Negotiable

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: One-year contract with possibility of extension and probation period of 60 working days.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree/master’s degree in water resources engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Health, Public Health, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • 3 years of relevant experience in WASH, rural water supply, sustainability, operations and maintenance, rehabilitation, water safety, or community-based service delivery.
  • Experience supervising field teams and coordinating with government offices and local stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of water point functionality monitoring, data quality, reporting, and evidence-based planning.
  • Good communication, coordination, leadership, problem-solving, and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently to field sites and work effectively in rural program locations.
