Senior GIS Expert

Job Overview:

We are seeking a qualified and motivated Senior GIS Expert to support the development and implementation of geospatial solutions using open-source technologies. The role requires a strong command of GIS tools and scripting languages, including Python and JavaScript, to manage, automate, and analyze spatial data. The position will contribute to enterprise GIS deployments and deliver actionable geospatial insights for multi-sectoral applications.

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Project Duration: 3 months

Duty Station: Head Office with project-based support

Required Number of Positions: One (1)

Remuneration: As per the organization pay scale plus other applicable staff benefits

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage, analyze, and process spatial datasets using QGIS and GDAL.
• Design, develop, and maintain geospatial databases using PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
• Automate spatial workflows using Python and JavaScript (e.g., for data cleaning, transformation, and processing tasks).
• Support deployment and maintenance of enterprise GIS platforms.
• Develop dynamic maps, dashboards, and geospatial web applications as needed.
• Ensure spatial data accuracy, integrity, and documentation across project outputs.
• Collaborate with field teams and internal departments to integrate GIS workflows.
• Prepare spatial reports, thematic maps, and visualization tools for stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in GIS, Geoinformatics, Geomatics, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience with open-source GIS tools (e.g., QGIS, GDAL).
• Proficiency in Python for geospatial scripting (e.g., PyQGIS, GeoPandas, Shapely).
• Working experience with JavaScript for GIS-related automation or web mapping applications.
• Solid understanding of spatial databases using PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
• Familiarity with GeoServer or other web GIS platforms is a plus.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
