Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

We are looking for an Education in Emergencies officer to help us implement, monitor, evaluate, and report agreed-upon activities in a timely manner. This role creates new opportunities for educational advancement and prepares students for future careers.

Your role?

While working with us a…..you will be in charge of the following,

  • Ensures the quality day-to-day implementation of the Education in Emergencies activities in target schools.
  • Keeps the record of sex disaggregated number of children in online language courses in the target area.
  • Review, assess and update the child learning situations in IDP sites and host communities of intervention areas.
  • Daily follow up with e-learning Facilitators/trained teachers to ensure quality of e-learning sessions.
  • Works with the parents and teachers to ensure that children are enrolled in the ALC project e-learning sessions in target schools.
  • Ensures that the teaching-learning process is in place in the e-learning spaces or language labs in schools as planned.
  • Develop activity detail implementation plan and spending plan once the budget is released
  • Ensures effective budget management based on existing financial management to avoid under or overspending.
  • Monitor children’s language proficiency level through different monitoring tools with MEAL team.
  • Generate evidence-based data and statistics of children participating in e-learning sessions on a timely basis.
  • Ensure children, community and stakeholders’ participation in the project.
  • Organize regular review meetings with relevant stakeholders at woreda level.
  • Communicate weekly, monthly and quarterly basis reports to filed HRP Coordinator on progress and any challenges.

CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORT

  • Conducts in-service teachers/facilitators trainings based on teachers training needs such as e-learning, digital technology and ICT infrastructure management.
  • Facilitate/organize self-paced e-learning classes for children in target schools to improve language proficiency.
  • Train English and Arabic language teachers on effective language teaching methodologies and the use of technology to support students learning
  • Establish language clubs and extracurricular activities in target schools to advance language skill
  • Organize dialogue for learners in target languages on current events or topics of interest to encourage critical thinking and language use
  • Organize training/orientation for target teachers on technology integration into schools set up.
  • Obtain, equip and furnish e-learning classes and lab rooms are with basic ICT and educational materials
  • Guide and operate computer, tables and other ICT equipment to support children and young people and facilitators.

COMMUNITY AND STAKEHOLDERS ENGAGEMENT

  • Awareness creation and community sensitization for community members on the importance of digital technology for their children.
  • Facilitate parenting skill training for parents to support the literacy training activities.
  • Conduct consultative workshop with stakeholders on digital literacy and benefits to children
  • Attend education cluster and coordination meeting to share ALC project activities updates and receive timely information.
  • Foster mechanisms for close collaboration and partnership with other stakeholders working in education

Job Requirements

BA/BED in Education, Education Planning and Management, Community Development, Psychology or other social science fields related to the position.

A certificate of basic computer skills is required.

Must Criteria

  • Minimum of 4+ years working experience in the education sector.
  • Sound knowledge of ICT and technical skills of computers
  • NGO experience will be an advantage.
  • Experience in handling education in emergency projects.
  • Good technical and report writing skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Fluent spoken and written English, Arabic and Afaan Oromo language is a plus.
  • Ability to meet to perform her/his activities within a short period of time
  • Computer literate with MS Word, Excel and Outlook

  • Knowledge of child protection interventions
  • Sensitive to gender and inclusion in education in emergencies
  • Holds a valid motorbike driving license, enabling safe and reliable transportation for fieldwork or other relevant activities.
