SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people. 

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community-based organizations across eight program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

Join Our Mission:

We are looking for a Project Cashier to work under the guidance and supervision of the Project Coordinator.

The Project Cashier is responsible for receiving payments made to SOS CVE, depositing cash and cheques into bank accounts, and effecting cash and cheque payments in accordance with established directives.

The incumbent carries out journalizing and posting of income and expenditures, ensuring timely and accurate recording of debits and credits across various accounts. He/she also assists in the closing of accounts and the preparation of financial reports.

 

Key Responsibilities

Prepare & Receive Payments

• Checks, counts, and receives payments made to SOS CVE, and issues official receipts.
• Deposits daily cash and cheque collections into the bank account.
• Reviews payment requests for accuracy, completeness, compliance, proper authorization, and clarity of invoices.
• Advances cash for authorized expenditures, ensuring supporting documents are complete and correct.
• Follows up and controls payable and receivable accounts.

Petty Cash Management

• Maintains the petty cash fund and replenishes it with the Programme Accountant or Finance & Admin Officer using proper payment vouchers.
• Processes petty cash disbursements for project‑related expenses, ensuring proper documentation and approvals.
• Regularly updates the petty cash ledger and reconciles balances against physical cash.
• Prepares and submits petty cash replenishment requests with a detailed transaction breakdown.
• Conducts periodic cash counts to verify fund balances and ensure accuracy.

Process Payments

• Follows up on timely payment of withholding tax, pension, and income tax to relevant government authorities.
• Effects payment of bills (telephone, electricity, water, etc.) upon approval.
• Notifies the Project Coordinator, Project Finance & Admin Officer, and Location Finance Department Manager immediately of any overage or shortage.

Documentation

• Keeps cash, cheque pads, printed receipts, and transaction documents in safe custody.
• Maintains records of amounts received and paid; reconciles cash on hand with recorded balance.
• Participates in inventory control of assets and stock items.
• Assists the Project Finance & Admin Officer in implementing the internal control system and financial procedures of the organization.
• Provides technical support to the project team or program location units on financial management issues.
• Compiles and submits daily receipts and payments to the Project Finance & Admin Officer with all necessary supporting documents.

Additional Responsibility

• Performs other duties as assigned by the line manager.

Essential Requirements (Must-Have):

• Education: Degree or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
• Experience: At least 4 years of direct cashier experience for Diploma holders, or 2 years for Degree holders.
• NGO Context: Experience working in an international organization, project, or NGO setting.
• Cash & Payment Handling: Proven experience managing petty cash, processing payments, and maintaining accurate financial records.
• Humanitarian Cash Disbursement: Experience working on cash disbursement in humanitarian projects.

Desired Assets (Nice-to-Have):

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
• Experience: Minimum 4 years working with an international organization on similar projects.
• Financial Reconciliation: Experience in financial reconciliation and cash balance transactions.
• Accounting Software: Proficiency in accounting software, D‑365, and Microsoft Office applications.
• Donor Compliance: Understanding of donor compliance requirements and local financial regulations.
• Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with local financial regulations and compliance standards for NGO projects.
• Financial Reporting: Ability to prepare detailed financial reports and reconciliation statements for project activities.
• Forecasting & Cost Management: Experience in financial forecasting and cost management during project implementation.
