IOM Ethiopia’s vision is to place the rights and well-being of migrants at the centre of its interventions, adopting a preventive, protective, and responsive approach. Its protection interventions in Ethiopia follow a six-pillar intervention that includes direct assistance to migrants, displaced persons and affected communities, thematic guidance, capacity development, advocacy, and research. The Protection Unit (PXU) works closely with the government of Ethiopia and various stakeholders in emergency, displacement, and migration settings to reduce protection risks and address the needs of vulnerable individuals and communities. IOM is guided by rights-based approaches across our migration programming, demonstrating commitment to the safeguarding of vulnerable groups.
IOM Ethiopia’s Protection Unit works closely with the Government of Ethiopia, and various stakeholders to contribute to addressing the needs, as well as to promote and uphold the rights, of individuals and their communities.
Within PXU, and under the Protection in Emergiencies sub-unit, programming areas direct, integrated, and protection mainstreaming efforts to contribute to safe, dignified, and protective programming for IOM Ethiopia’s emergency responses, supporting the Humanitarian Response and Recovery Unit (HRRU) through multi-sectoral programming.
Under the overall supervision of the Head of Sub Office, and the technical supervision of the Senior Programme Associate (Protection Emergencies), the successful candidate will support the implementation of protection activities. Additionally, the selected candidate will support the protection mainstreaming efforts, in coordination with other HRRU teams at field level.
This is a Project Associate (Protection in Emergencies) position under an Affiliated Contract (non-staff) equivalent to UG(G4).
This position will be hired under affiliated contract (non-staff) and in particular, he/she will undertake the following responsibilities and accountabilities:

IOM covers affiliate contractor against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the affiliate contract. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Affiliate contractors are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
