Organization:

The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) is an international nonprofit organization providing trauma healing services to survivors of war and human rights violations. Headquartered in Minnesota, USA, with offices in Africa and the Middle East, CVT works locally and globally to deliver trauma rehabilitation, build the capacity of service providers and human rights defenders, and advocate for the prevention and end of gross human rights abuses. CVT has been operating in Ethiopia since 2013.

Summary: CVT is seeking physiotherapists to provide high-quality physiotherapy services at CVT’s Shire, Endabaguna, Sheraro, or Mai-Tsebri Healing Centers, as well as in Community Resource Centers under the Area-Based Approach in collaboration with other consortium members in the ECHO-funded project. The role supports individuals, groups, and communities in recovering from physical challenges resulting from torture and war trauma. Working under the daily supervision of clinicians as part of an interdisciplinary team, physiotherapists will aim to: improve functional ability and reduce pain; support the management of conditions such as incontinence, stress, poor sleep, and chronic pain; and enhance social participation, coping, body awareness, and self-regulation.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

• Conduct physiotherapy assessments for clients (adults and minors) to evaluate progress and establish treatment goals.
  • Determine and deliver appropriate treatment techniques, including exercise therapy, manual therapy, and education, in individual or group sessions.
  • Educate clients and caregivers on prevention and self-management strategies.
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical records, documentation, and statistical data.
  • Ensure ethical practice and confidentiality in line with CVT policies and WCPT standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of treatment spaces and equipment.
  • Participate in professional development, trainings, and supervision sessions.
  • Support programmatic needs, including after-hours or weekend work when required.

Interdisciplinary Team Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with counselors, psychotherapists, social workers, and M&E to ensure integrated care.
  • Communicate regularly to share client progress and coordinate interventions.
  • Participate in internal training sessions to support team understanding and capacity.
  • Complete assessment and documentation promptly for interdisciplinary access.

Community Engagement:

• Assist with community outreach, awareness, and sensitization programs.
  • Identify individuals whose physical functioning may be affected by war trauma or torture.
  • Support external trainings for community members, leaders, NGOs, and government staff.
  • Contribute to referral systems and collaborative partnerships with local and international organizations.

Self-Care and Professional Support:

• Attend regular supervision, debriefing, and case conferences.
  • Maintain a personal self-care schedule to prevent burnout and vicarious traumatization.
  • Seek support when experiencing secondary trauma and provide formal feedback to colleagues when requested.

Qualifications:

• Required
  • University Degree in physiotherapy.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience. Previous work experience with CVT Ethiopia strongly preferred.
  • Valid professional license and registration.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Tigrinya, Amharic and English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Experience working in local and regional contexts, knowledge of local areas and communities is desirable
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and needs
  • Able to work in stressful environments
• Preferred
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience
  • Experience working with torture survivors in IDP settings
  • Experience working in humanitarian response

6. This job profile may be adapted according to the evolution of CVT activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Work Environment:

• Office environment with regular travel to operational sites.
• Position is based in Shire, Endabaguna, Sheraro, or Mai-Tsebri, with potential travel to other sites in Tigray.

Physical Demands:

• Regularly required to talk, hear, and see.
• Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs, use hands for tasks, and reach with arms.
• Must be able to lift and carry heavy supplies on occasion.
• Requires car travel for up to 6 hours per one-way journey.

Travel:

• Regular travel within Tigray, depending on project development and security conditions.
