JOB SUMMARY

The Pediatrician is responsible for providing comprehensive, high-quality pediatric and neonatal healthcare services at Humera General Hospital. The position delivers preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative, and emergency care for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents through the Pediatric Outpatient Department (OPD), Pediatric Ward, Emergency Unit, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Pediatrician ensures evidence-based clinical management, participates in emergency and on-call services, supports the strengthening of pediatric and neonatal services, and actively transfers knowledge and clinical skills to Medical Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Interns, and other healthcare professionals through bedside teaching, mentorship, and continuous professional development. The position also contributes to quality improvement initiatives and ensures service delivery in accordance with the Ethiopian National Clinical Guidelines, hospital protocols, and Medical Teams International standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical  

• Provide specialist pediatric and neonatal services for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents in accordance with national treatment guidelines and hospital protocols.
• Diagnose and manage pediatric patients presenting to outpatient, inpatient, emergency, and referral services.
• Conduct comprehensive pediatric consultations, establish diagnoses, prescribe appropriate treatment, and ensure follow-up and referral as needed.
• Lead the management of pediatric inpatients, including daily ward rounds, treatment reviews, discharge planning, and referral coordination.
• Provide specialist care for critically ill children and newborns in the Pediatric Ward, NICU, and Emergency Department.
• Lead the clinical management of neonatal conditions including prematurity, low birth weight, neonatal sepsis, birth asphyxia, respiratory distress syndrome, neonatal jaundice, hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and congenital conditions.
• Perform neonatal resuscitation and other pediatric procedures within the scope of specialty practice.
• Manage severe and complicated childhood illnesses, including pneumonia, diarrhea, severe acute malnutrition with medical complications, meningitis, tuberculosis, anemia, malaria, epilepsy, and other communicable and non-communicable diseases.
• Request and interpret laboratory and imaging investigations and ensure rational use of medicines, blood products, and other medical resources.
• Provide emergency stabilization, treatment, and referral support for critically ill newborns and children.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case management, mortality reviews, Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR), clinical audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Mentor, coach, and provide technical support to General Practitioners, Nurses, Midwives, Medical Interns, and other healthcare providers to strengthen pediatric and neonatal care services.
• Facilitate structured knowledge and skill transfer to government-employed health professionals through bedside teaching, clinical coaching, on-the-job training, case reviews, and continuous professional development activities to ensure sustainable strengthening of pediatric and neonatal services.
• Support implementation of national child health, IMNCI, ETAT+, NICU, and pediatric care protocols.
• Ensure proper documentation of patient records, admission and discharge summaries, referrals, mortality reports, and other clinical records.
• Promote infection prevention and control (IPC), patient safety, and professional ethical standards in all clinical services.
• Participate in continuing medical education (CME), departmental meetings, and professional development activities.
• Contribute to departmental planning, performance reviews, service improvement initiatives, and hospital quality improvement activities.
• Perform other duties assigned by the team leader consistent with the role of a Specialist Pediatrician.

Quality Management  

• Deliver high-quality, evidence-based pediatric and neonatal care in accordance with the Ethiopian National Clinical Guidelines and hospital protocols.
• Ensure timely, safe, and patient-centered care through accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and continuous monitoring of patients.
• Promote rational use of medicines, laboratory investigations, and other medical resources.
• Maintain complete, accurate, and timely clinical documentation and reporting.
• Adhere to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards, patient safety practices, and professional ethics.
• Participate in clinical audits, mortality reviews, and quality improvement initiatives to strengthen pediatric and neonatal services.
• upport continuous quality improvement through mentorship and skill transfer to Medical Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, and other healthcare professionals.

Additional activities  

• Support other areas of the clinic as requested or needed to ensure efficiency and quality of care to all
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment, disposing of waste and sharps appropriately.
• Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding.

EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTFICATION  

• Medical Doctor (MD) with Specialty Certification in Pediatrics and Child Health from a recognized institution.
• Valid professional license to practice as a Pediatrician in Ethiopia.
• Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), ETAT+, or other relevant pediatric emergency care training is an added advantage

 EXPERIENCE  

• Minimum of two(2) years of relevant post-specialization clinical experience, preferably in a general or referral hospital.
• Demonstrated experience in Pediatric Outpatient (OPD), Pediatric Inpatient, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Pediatric Emergency services.
• Experience in managing critically ill newborns and children, including neonatal emergencies and severe acute malnutrition with medical complications.
• Experience in clinical teaching, mentorship, and capacity building of Medical Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Interns, and other healthcare professionals.
• Experience working in humanitarian, emergency, or resource-limited settings is an added advantage.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge 

• Sound knowledge of pediatric and neonatal medicine, including IMNCI, ETAT+, NICU, KMC, and the Ethiopian National Clinical Guidelines.
• Knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC), patient safety, and quality improvement principles.
• Understanding of humanitarian and public health contexts is an advantage.

Skills
