International Clinical Laboratories (ICL) is one of the largest independent clinical diagnostic centers on the African continent. ICL opened its door for service in 2004 with the aim of “contributing to the maintenance and enhancement of the quality of life throughout Ethiopia” by encompassing a system of human and physical resources designed to meet the changing healthcare needs of the population it serves.

It is the only laboratory accredited by the USA-based Joint Commission International (JCI) five times in a row. The laboratory provides more than 300 tests in collaboration with its referral laboratories.

ICL would like to fill the following vacant positions under the Technical Pathology Department by inviting all qualified and competent applicants:

Job Summary

The Pathology Specimen & Record Management Technician is responsible for the accurate receipt, handling, processing, and documentation of biological specimens within the Anatomic Pathology Department. The role ensures all specimens are properly identified, prepared, stored, and tracked in accordance with internal protocols, ISO standards, and regulatory requirements.

The technician supports the pathology team by maintaining data accuracy in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), facilitating efficient workflow, and upholding quality and safety standards. The position also involves close collaboration with pathologists and laboratory staff, inventory and waste management, and active participation in audits, compliance initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The Specimen Management Technician is responsible for the accurate handling, processing, and recording of biological specimens in the pathology department. This role ensures that all specimens are managed in accordance with established protocols, maintaining quality and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Receive and log specimens from various sources, ensuring proper identification and labeling.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis, including processing, preservation, and storage.
  • Troubleshoots problems related to specimens and test orders and maintains documentation of such problems and corrective action taken.
  • Manages laboratory generated information to enable effective, timely, accurate, and cost-effective reporting of patient data.
  • Accurately enter specimen data into laboratory information systems (LIS) and maintain up-to-date records.
  • Track specimen status and communicate relevant information to laboratory staff and other departments.
  • Ensure adherence to quality control procedures and protocols for specimen management.
  • Participate in audits and inspections to maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Work closely with pathologists, laboratory technicians, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate efficient specimen processing.
  • Assist in training new staff on specimen management procedures and best practices.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of specimen supplies and materials, placing orders as necessary.
  • Ensure proper disposal of biological waste according to safety regulations
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements, including ISO requirements, audits, finance, and accounting management requirements.

  • Ability to perform tasks accurately and thoroughly, ensuring specimen labeling and data entry are error-free.
  • Strong capability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and maintain orderly records and specimen storage.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and other relevant software for specimen management.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members and other departments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, supporting colleagues and contributing to a positive workplace culture.
  • Capability to identify issues in specimen management and develop effective solutions in a timely manner.
  • Understanding of safety regulations and compliance standards related to specimen handling and laboratory practices.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes in procedures, technology, and workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to build relationships with colleagues and provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality in handling sensitive biological specimens and patient information.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA degree in health sciences, including Histotechnology, Cytotechnology, and Laboratory Technology.
  • Demonstrable experience of Anatomy pathology specimen handling, recording, and storing all necessary specimens and documents.
  • Experience working in a pathology and Laboratory.
  • Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook) skills
