Job Description
Position: Monitoring, Learning & SMART Operation Room Officer
The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), in partnership with the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), supports the conservation and management of the Bale Mountains National Park, one of Africa’s most important biodiversity landscapes.
FZS is seeking a dynamic and skilled professional to strengthen monitoring systems, support data-driven conservation management, and coordinate the park’s SMART law-enforcement monitoring and operation room.
Key Responsibilities
Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL)
-
- Coordinate program monitoring systems and data collection.
- Analyze monitoring results and prepare periodic reports.
- Support adaptive management and learning processes.
SMART Operation Room Management
-
- Manage the SMART-based law enforcement monitoring system.
- Track ranger patrols, threats, and incidents.
- Produce patrol analysis, maps, and operational summaries.
Data Management & Analysis
-
- Maintain databases for ecological, law enforcement, and community data.
- Conduct spatial and statistical analysis.
- Produce dashboards, maps, and visual summaries for decision-making.
Communication & Knowledge Management

- Document conservation achievements and lessons learned.
- Prepare donor reports, briefs, and communication materials.
- Support visibility of conservation outcomes.
Capacity Building
-
- Train ranger teams and staff in SMART tools and monitoring systems.
- Support departments to improve reporting and data use.
Required Qualifications
- MSc in Natural Resource Management, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, or related field.
- More than 5 years of relevant experience in conservation monitoring, data management, or protected area management.
- Experience with SMART, GIS, spatial analysis, or conservation monitoring tools.
- Strong data analysis, communication, and report writing skills.
- Experience working in protected areas or conservation programs and Ecological Management and Threat Monitoring is an advantage.
