Medical Teams International holds strict child and vulnerable adult safeguarding principles and a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct related to sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse in the workplace and other places where the organization’s activities are rendered. Parallel to technical competence, recruitment & selection, hiring decisions will give due emphasis to assessing candidates’ eligibility thorough background checks, police clearance, and professional reference check processes.

JOB SUMMARY

The Midwife will contribute to the calling of Medical Teams  providing high-quality comprehensive maternal, newborn, and reproductive health services in Medical Teams -supported health facilities. The role involves antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and family planning counseling, safe delivery support, and emergency obstetric care. The midwife is expected to ensures respectful, timely, culturally sensitive care and evidence-based care in line with national and international standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide comprehensive antenatal care, identifying and managing risk factors in pregnancy.
  • Conduct safe and clean deliveries, ensuring proper use of infection prevention protocols.
  • Monitor labor progress and provide active management of the third stage of labor (AMTSL).
  • Offer immediate postpartum care for mothers and newborns.
  • Identify, manage, and refer obstetric and neonatal complications appropriately.
  • Provide postnatal follow-up and health education.
  • Administer medications, vaccinations, and supplements as required.
  • Provide family planning counseling and services in accordance with national guidelines.
  • Educate women, families, and communities on safe motherhood, newborn care, breastfeeding, nutrition, and family planning.
  • Promote community awareness of maternal health and available services.
  • Collect and report data in line with facility and program requirements (e.g., HMIS).
  • Provide compassionate and respectful care to all patients who present to the clinic
  • Support other staff and colleagues to maintain good infection control practices to prevent spread of illnesses within the clinic and among the staff
  • Support safeguarding of program participants and employees through promoting an environment of awareness and upholding the code of conduct provisions of Medical Teams Protection from Sexual Exploitation & Abuse, Child & Vulnerable Adult protection, and harassment-free workplace policies. Incumbents will remain alert and responsive to any child and adult safeguarding risks, acquire relevant knowledge and skills which will enable you to promote strong safeguarding practices, understand the child and adult safeguarding policy and procedures, and conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the Safeguarding.

EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTIFICATIONS

Required: 

  • BSc degreein Midwife, and related educational background from recognized academic institutions.
  • Valid professional license/certification by the national regulatory body.

EXPERIENCE 

  • At least 1 years of experience providing maternal and newborn services, preferably in a primary health care or humanitarian setting.
  • Knowledge of basic emergency obstetric and newborn care (BEmONC) is an advantage.
  • Experience working with INGOs is an added advantage

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge:   

  • Knowledge of development & humanitarian issues and concepts
  • Skilled in use of partograph, AMTSL (Active Management of the Third Stage of Labor), and basic newborn care.
  • Fluent spoken and written local Language Amharic and English.
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Proven ability to be flexible in demanding situations
  • Excellent communicator
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment
  • Negotiation and representation skills
  • Analytical and problem solving Computer literate, able to work efficiently in Microsoft office on standard or mobile platforms.

  • If in travel status, occasional to frequent traversing over rough or steep terrain in either a motor vehicle or on foot.
