Established in 1991, Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) is a non-profit, non-partisan, and an independent research and membership organization in Ethiopia. The EEA has interrelated objectives of supporting economic policy design through producing reliable and independent scientific evidence; enhancing economics and development research and dissemination; promoting the discipline of economics; serving as a platform for dialogue on economic issues; promoting the professional interest of its members; and facilitating professional networking between Ethiopian economists and those in other countries.

01. Senior Researcher I

Job Summary
The EEA is looking for a Senior Researcher. The successful applicant, who assumes a Senior Researcher position will dedicate approximately 70% of his/her time to undertaking research and 30% of his/her time as a publication officer. This role requires a well-qualified, experienced and versatile individual who can lead independent research and also manage the production and quality of the Association’s key publications in general and the Ethiopian Journal of Economics in particular.
Key Responsibilities
Research Component (70%)
- Prepare concept notes and grant proposals to mobilize financial and non-financial resources for possible funding.
- Design and conduct high-quality policy-relevant research on the Ethiopian economy, focusing on areas such as macroeconomy, poverty, trade, agriculture, finance, labor, and the likes.
- Author and co-author working papers, policy briefs, and research reports for publication by the EEA.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences, workshops, and policy forums.
- Provide technical backstopping and mentorship to junior researchers and research assistants.
- Collaborate with the research team to translate research findings into actionable policy advice.
- Prepare terms of reference (ToRs) for research, training, and forums to be organized;
- Deliver training sessions to partners on selected thematic areas;
- Provide guidance and technical assistance to EEA partners and relevant stakeholders;
- Oversee project activities and ensure their effective implementation and timely completion;
- Monitor national and international developments related to EEA’s strategic priorities and objectives;
- Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Publications Component (30%)
- Serve as an Editorial Manager for the Ethiopian Journal of Economics (EJE) and other EEA publications.
- Conduct desk reviews of submitted manuscripts to check compliance with guidelines, formatting, plagiarism standards, and scope.
- Oversee the online submission and peer review system, ensuring smooth workflow and timely communication with authors, reviewers, and editors.
- Coordinate the double-blind peer review process, track reviewer deadlines, and maintain accurate manuscript records.
- Support the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board in decision-making, policy updates, and reviewer recruitment.
Salary: As per EEA competitive salary scale
Job Grade: IV- (Hybrid with 70% Research & 30% Publication roles)
Reports To: Director of Research and Policy Analysis
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Essential: Ph.D. in Economics or a closely related field from a recognized university.
- Desirable: Experience in editorial roles in different publications, including journals.
Experience
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant post-Ph.D. experience in research and/or academic publishing.
- Research Track Record: Proven track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and demonstrated experience in policy-oriented research.
- Experience in academic journal management, online submission systems (OJS, Scholar One, Editorial Manager), and knowledge of indexing/accreditation processes. Prior experience in academic publishing, particularly in economics or related disciplines.
- Familiarity with peer review processes and ethical guidelines (e.g., COPE guidelines).
- Prior experience in editorial roles like, managing editor, associate editor, or editorial board member for an academic journal.
Research Publications:
- At least four relevant publications in reputable journals, indexed in WoS, Scopus, or Ecnolit. Of which he/she authored at least two articles as a corresponding author. Additional publications in the form of working papers or proceedings are also desirable.
