Since its creation in 2009, ALIMA has treated more than 13 million patients and today deploys its operations in 14 countries. In 2023, ALIMA cared for 2.8 million patients, including over a million children under the age of 5, received 157,393 people for mental health consultations, assisted 67,617 births, carried out 64 projects in 14 countries. Whenever possible, we work in partnership with local NGOs to ensure that our patients benefit from the best and most relevant expertise wherever it is, whether within their own country or in the rest of the world. In addition, to improve the humanitarian response, we are carrying out operational and clinical research projects, particularly in the field of the fight against malnutrition and viral haemorrhagic fevers.

ALIMA’S TEAM: more than 2000 people are currently working for ALIMA. The field teams, closest to the patients, receive their support from coordination teams generally based in the countries’ capitals. These receive support from the 4 desk teams and the emergency and opening team based at the operational headquarters in Dakar, Senegal. The Paris and New York teams are actively working to raise funds and represent ALIMA. The rest of the ALIMA Galaxy includes individuals and partner teams working on behalf of other organisations such as medical NGOs BEFEN, ALERT Health, SOS Doctors / KEOGO, AMCP, research organisations PACCI, and INSERM, Bordeaux or Copenhagen Universities, the INGO Solidarités International, and many others.

ALIMA IN ETHIOPIA

ALIMA, registered in Ethiopia in December 2022, worked in the Somali region, south-east of the country. ALIMA implemented a Health and Nutrition project in three woredas in the Afder zone from May 2023 to October 2024, followed by another integrated health and nutrition response in two woredas from  May 2025 – present.  In Tigray, ALIMA also supported integrated health and nutrition programs in Shire (May 2025 – May 2026) and Southeastern Zone (November 2024 – present).

Pending confirmation of donor funding,  ALIMA plans to launch an integrated response in health and protection to support refugees in the Gambella region (Nuer Zone, Makuey Woreda, Luakdong Refugee Camp).  The project intends to focus on ensuring 24/7 access to quality Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), including Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (BEmONC), Clinical Management of Rape (CMR) for GBV survivors, integrated Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), and establishing a vital medical referral loop to Nyangnyang Primary Hospital.

LOCATION OF POSITION:  Gambella region, Lukdong Camp & Nyangyang with frequent visits of project areas within Nuer zone, Wanthoa, Makuey, & Akobo Woredas and Gambella Town.

Being a new region of intervention for ALIMA, the new team will guarantee the implementation of the new project as well as all administrative and logistical requirements to establish ALIMA in the region. This team will be based in the Nuer zone, Nyangnyang town and Lukdong Refugee Camp, and will ensure the implementation of the activities and a smooth beginning of operations on the ground.

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINKS

Reports to: Medical Referent.

Directly Supervises: Midwives (6 positions).

Collaborates and Interacts with: Pharmacy Stock Manager, Logistics Supervisor, and partner’s child protection/GBV social work teams.

PROTECTION OF BENEFICIARIES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Level 3: As part of his/her duties, the incumbent will visit programs and come into contact with children and/or vulnerable adults. Therefore, a criminal record check or a certificate of good character will be required. In situations where a criminal record check or character reference is not possible, a declaration of honour will be requested.

MISSION AND MAIN ACTIVITIES

Main Purpose

The Midwife Supervisor is responsible for organizing, planning, and supervising all Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) nursing/midwife activities in Luakdong Refugee Camp on a 24/7 basis. The position ensures the technical quality of Antenatal Care (ANC), Postnatal Care (PNC), skilled birth attendance (BEmONC), and Clinical Management of Rape (CMR) in acordance with Ethiopian and WHO standards. The supervisor provides guidance, clinical mentoring, and scheduling management for the team of midwives, while ensuring smooth referrals to Nyangnyang Primary Hospital.

Accountabilities

1. Supervision and Organization of SRH Services

• Organize and manage the duty roster, shifts, and on-call rotations for the 7 midwives to guarantee 24/7 coverage of safe deliveries and obstetric emergencies at the Luakdong camp health facility.
• Together with the Medical Referent, supervise the daily implementation of comprehensive antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, ensuring all clinical practices follow national and ALIMA medical protocols.
• Coordinate with, and support the Medical Referent to oversee the implementation of Clinical Management of Rape (CMR) services, ensuring survivor-centered care, maximum confidentiality, and rapid provision of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) within 72 hours.
• Monitor and supervise the distribution of postpartum hygiene kits to mothers delivering at the facility.

2. Clinical Mentoring and Capacity Building

• Provide regular, supportive clinical coaching and on-the-job training to midwives on BEmONC functions, neonatal resuscitation, and handling of complicated obstetric cases.
• Identify training needs within the midwifery team and assist the Medical Activity Manager in designing and facilitating clinical training sessions.
• Train and guide the midwifery team in ensuring the proper usage, maintenance, and sterilization of maternal health equipment and medical instruments.

3. Pharmacy and Equipment Management

• In collaboration with the Pharmacy Stock Manager, monitor the daily consumption of reproductive health medicines, consumables, and delivery kits to prevent stockouts.
• Ensure the strict maintenance of the oxytocin cold chain and other temperature-sensitive maternal medications in the clinical unit.
• Ensure that emergency kits, including PEP kits and BEmONC drug kits, are complete, accessible, and ready for immediate clinical use at all times.

4. Hygiene, IPC, and Waste Management

• Supervise and maintain high-quality Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and hygiene standards in the maternity, labor, delivery, and recovery wards.
• Ensure the proper and safe segregation, handling, and disposal of clinical waste (using placenta pits and medical incinerators).

5. Data Collection, Quality Assurance, and Coordination

• Ensure midwives accurately document clinical findings in registers, patient records, and medical files while respecting strict patient confidentiality.
• Collect, verify, and compile weekly and monthly reproductive health and GBV clinical data, and submit reports to the Medical Referent.
• Coordinate the medical referral pathway with the Medical Referent and logistics team for emergency obstetric cases requiring secondary care at Nyangnyang Primary Hospital.
• Maintain active communication with partner’s community teams to ensure continuous, safe referral and feedback loops for GBV survivors.
• Prepare and compile reports on medical activities in line with donor guidelines and requirements

Implementation of prevention measures against abuse of power, gender-based and sexual violence: 

• Participates in training and awareness sessions
• Implements abuse prevention standards
• Ensures that team members complete training and awareness sessions and follow abuse prevention rules
• Helps create and maintain a nurturing and protective environment

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Training / Education:

• BSc in Midwifery from a recognized university.
• Active, valid professional practicing license from the relevant Ethiopian health authority

Experiences:

• Minimum of 3 to 4 years of clinical experience as a midwife, with at least 1 to 2 years in a clinical supervisory or team leader role, preferably in a humanitarian, refugee, or emergency context.
• Proven technical competency and extensive clinical experience in BEmONC, neonatal care, family planning, and Clinical Management of Rape (CMR).
• Demonstrated experience managing staff schedules, duty rosters, and leading clinical teams.
• Experience in clinical training, mentoring, or facilitation of practical on-the-job training

Desirable

• Prior experience working with international NGOs in newly established refugee camps or remote settings.
• Familiarity with medical data compilation and reporting using national health information registries (HMIS/DHIS2).

Technical Skills: 

• Advanced clinical midwifery skills, skilled birth attendance, and emergency obstetric procedures.
• Solid knowledge of post-rape care clinical guidelines and the management of PEP kits.
• Strong understanding of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols and health facility hygiene systems.
• Good basic computer skills, especially Microsoft Excel, for data collection and schedule tracking

Languages spoken by the candidate

• Oral and written fluency in English and Amharic is essential.
