Background:
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is a research institute committed to conducting high-quality research that informs policies to improve food security, nutrition, and resilience worldwide, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries.
IFPRI is currently evaluating multiple coffee agronomy programs designed to increase the productivity and incomes of smallholder farmers in major coffee-producing zones. These studies also include a rigorous assessment of the impacts of regenerative practices on coffee production, productivity, and farmer incomes. IFPRI seeks a qualified, Ethiopia-based Research Collaborator/Consultant to contribute to these ongoing impact evaluations and related research activities in coffee agronomy. The Collaborator will support IFPRI-led research efforts in Ethiopia and will be involved in the design and implementation of surveys, data analysis, and the preparation of research reports and papers.
Scope of work:
- Survey design, implementation, and monitoring: Design, adapt, and revise survey instruments in line with study objectives and pre-analysis plans; support the piloting of survey tools; monitor and supervise field data collection; ensure adherence to approved protocols and pre-analysis plans; and systematically document survey implementation processes.
- Research and data analysis: Conduct comprehensive literature reviews on relevant thematic areas; clean, manage, and analyze survey and administrative data using appropriate and advanced statistical and econometric methods; and contribute to the drafting of research reports, papers, and policy briefs, incorporating feedback from IFPRI researchers and project partners.
- Team supervision and coordination: Provide technical guidance and day-to-day support to research officers and research assistants involved in the projects; oversee data quality assurance processes; and supervise the preparation of clean, well-documented datasets, replication files, and analytical documentation.
- Stakeholder engagement and dissemination: Present research findings to IFPRI staff, collaborators, donors, and other stakeholders; and contribute to research dissemination activities.
Deliverables:
- Midline/endline survey instruments, including enumerator training materials and a data quality monitoring dashboard.
- Summary statistics of key midline/endline evaluation indicators, accompanied by a brief report summarizing results from high-frequency data quality checks (including non-response rates).
- Cleaned, well-documented, and organized midline/endline datasets ready for analysis.
- Descriptive and econometric analysis of midline/endline data, including tables and figures summarizing key results.
- Drafting of research reports, academic papers, and policy briefs.
- Presentation materials for dissemination of research findings to technical and policy audiences.
Required qualifications and experience:
- PhD or equivalent degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Statistics, or a closely related field; candidates who are in the final stages of their PhD studies are also strongly encouraged to apply.
- Strong expertise in microeconomic theory and advanced quantitative and analytical methods.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and other impact evaluation studies.
