Job Overview

As a Health Information Systems Developer / DHIS2 Specialist, you will play a crucial role in designing, maintaining, and improving our digital health information systems supporting the infrastructure, and manage a variety of data environments. You will be responsible for developing and configuring DHIS2 platforms, building and maintaining data pipelines, and creating interactive dashboards that drive informed decision-making.

In addition, you will actively contribute to the development of AI-driven solutions, including supporting computer vision model training, data annotation, and integration of AI outputs into health information systems. Your work will bridge traditional health data management with emerging technologies, enabling innovative ways to analyze, interpret, and act on complex datasets.

This position requires a combination of technical proficiency, analytical thinking, and collaboration skills. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure data systems are efficient, accurate, and aligned with organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

1. DHIS2 Development and Configuration

  • Configure, customize, and maintain DHIS2 instances, including metadata, indicators, dashboards, and data entry forms.
  • Support DHIS2 user management, access control, and data validation processes.
  • Develop and maintain integrations between DHIS2 and other systems using APIs and web services.
  • Conduct troubleshooting, debugging, and performance tuning for DHIS2 systems.

2. Dashboard Maintenance and Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Metabase, or Superset.
  • Collaborate with program teams to understand reporting needs and translate them into user-friendly visualizations.
  • Ensure dashboards are accurate, current, and aligned with organizational objectives.

3. Data Pipeline Management

  • Build and optimize ETL pipelines for data extraction, transformation, and loading from multiple sources (including DHIS2).
  • Implement data quality checks and ensure the integrity and reliability of data workflows.
  • Work with data engineering and IT teams to troubleshoot and resolve pipeline issues.

4. Software Development

  • Contribute and gradually lead the design and development of new applications or features using programming languages (Python, Java, JavaScript, or SQL).
  • Lead backend integration, RESTful API development, and automation of data processes.
  • Manage testing, documentation, and version control (e.g., Git).

5. Data Analysis and Interpretation

  • Support analysis and interpretation of data to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights.
  • Support monitoring and evaluation teams with analytical reporting and visualization.
  • Work with stakeholders to define and deliver data-driven solutions.

6. Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborate across teams including data analysts and health programme managers.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Lead capacity-building activities and on the job training providing DHIS2 user support.

7. Documentation and Best Practices

  • Stay current with emerging technologies, tools, and DHIS2 developments.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of data systems, dashboards, and pipelines.
  • Follow software development best practices and contribute to process improvement.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Systems
  • Proven experience in DHIS2 configuration, management, or development.
  • Understanding of data pipeline concepts and hands-on experience with ETL processes.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python, or JavaScript).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience integrating DHIS2 with other systems (e.g., OpenMRS, or data warehouses).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and version control (Git).
  • Understanding of data standards such as FHIR or HL7.
  • Experience in public health, NGOs, or global health information systems.
