Duty Station: Benishangul Gumuz region Ura Refuggee Camp

Implementation Woreda: Ura Refuggee Camp

Type of Employment: 22 months Contract

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Protection Officer will be responsible for the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of all protection activities within the Ura Refugee Camp. The role ensures that quality, rights-based protection services and interventions are delivered to refugees and host communities, adhering to international protection principles and humanitarian standards. The officer will work closely with community structures, local authorities, and other humanitarian partners to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all persons of concern.

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Protection monitoring , Case Management and Referrals: Identify persons with specific needs (PSNs) and individuals at risk, providing individual protection counseling and ensuring timely and appropriate case management. Facilitate internal and external referrals to relevant service providers (e.g., medical, legal, psychosocial support, livelihoods) through established referral pathways.
  • Psychosocial Support (PSS): Coordinate the provision of culturally appropriate individual and group-based PSS and crisis intervention services to promote emotional well-being and resilience among the refugee population.
  • Community Engagement and Mobilization: Establish and strengthen women’s safe spaces and community-based protection networks, ensuring active participation in identifying and mitigating protection risks.
  • Awareness Raising and Training: Design and deliver awareness sessions on human rights, protection principles, GBV prevention, and available services within the camp.
  • Coordination and Reporting: Liaise with the UNHCR, ARRA, GBV Sub-Working Group, and other partners in the camp. Maintain accurate data documentation and submit timely, high-quality reports to the Project Manager.\
  • Adherence to Standards: Ensure all activities strictly follow international protection principles,
  • ethical guidelines for GBV data management, PSEA policies, and the organization’s Code of Conduct.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Gender Studies, International Law, Human Rights, or a related field.

Experience:

    • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in protection programming, preferably in a refugee or humanitarian setting.
    • Demonstrated experience in GBV response, case management, or community-based protection is a strong advantage.
    • Experience working in participatory engagement and facilitating training sessions.

Skills:

    • Strong understanding of international protection and humanitarian principles.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and report writing skills.
    • Proficiency in English (written and spoken) is essential.
    • Knowledge of local languages spoken in the Benishangul Gumuz region or by the refugee population is highly desirable.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data management tools.
    • The Protection Officer is expected to demonstrate core competencies including striving for excellence, collaborating, taking the lead, communicating effectively, and demonstrating integrity, especially regarding ethical conduct and safeguarding against sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment
