MERSA Media Institute is a nonprofit media policy think tank. We work to help create vibrant, responsible, and independent media institutions, professional unions, and education centers through research, capacity building, and institutional support in Ethiopia.
Position Summary
Background
With the enduring importance of radio and the rapid growth of podcasts, MERSA Media Institute (MMI) is looking for an experienced Audio Journalism and Production Trainer. This individual will lead our training module focused on producing high-quality audio stories for both traditional broadcast and digital platforms. The ideal candidate is a passionate audio producer and storyteller with a talent for teaching.
Key Responsibilities
Scope of Work
The Audio Journalism and Production Trainer will be responsible for the following:
- Deliver comprehensive training on all aspects of radio and audio journalism, including interviewing, scriptwriting, field recording, and studio techniques.
- Prepare practical workshops, listening sessions, and hands-on production assignments.
- Instruct trainees on using audio recording equipment and digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Adobe Audition \ for editing and mixing.
- Guide trainees through the full lifecycle of producing audio content for both broadcast radio (e.g., news reports, features) and digital platforms (e.g., podcasts).
- Teach the principles of sound design, narrative pacing, and ethical considerations in audio storytelling.
- Provide detailed feedback on trainees’ audio projects, focusing on both technical quality and narrative strength.
- Evaluate trainee skills development and final project outcomes.
- Submit a training report with assessments and recommendations.
Requirements
- A degree in Journalism, Broadcasting, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in broadcast radio and/or digital audio production (podcasting), with a strong portfolio.
- Demonstrated experience as a trainer or educator in an audio or broadcast environment.
- Expert-level proficiency with audio recording hardware and editing software.
- Deep understanding of storytelling techniques specific to the audio medium for different audiences.
- Knowledge of broadcast programming as well as podcast distribution and audience engagement strategies.
- Excellent communication, listening, and feedback skills.
- Ability to work independently and foster a creative learning environment.
- Fluency in both English and Amharic is required.
