MEDA’s Overview:

Mennonite Economic Development Associate (MEDA) is an international non-governmental organization incorporated in Canada and registered in Ethiopia.  MEDA is currently carrying out EMERTA project which stands for Ethiopians Motivating Enterprises to Rise in Trade and Agri-business focusing specifically on women. The project is committed to increasing sustainable employment and income generation for women and men in Amhara Region of Ethiopia in rice, vegetables, and gemstone sectors. MEDA is committing to identify and mitigate the social and economic barriers that limit women’s participation in the selected market sectors and constrain their participation in household decisions and control over resources.

Job Overview:

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Rice/Vegetable Senior Value Chain Specialist, the Woreda Agriculture and Business Development Coordinator works closely with Woreda Office of Agriculture, Office of Trade, and other relevant Government of Ethiopia units as well as other non-governmental partners for smooth implementation of EMERTA activities within the woreda. The Woreda Coordinator is expected to closely support project clients (rice and vegetable producers and MSMEs) and act as a liaison between the EMERTA project and woreda level stakeholders.

Job Requirements:

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities 

1.     Facilitate mobilization of technical staff from concerned woreda level government offices in planning, implementation, partners joint support supervision, and Monitoring and Impact Measurement (MIM) activities.

2.     Coordinate woreda stakeholders and project clients to assess needs related to rice and vegetable production and marketing.

3.     In collaboration with stakeholders, following selection criteria, identify MSME and producer level project clients in target kebeles.

4.     Facilitate the integration of cross-cutting themes such as financial services, gender, and environment.

5.     Facilitate implementation of capacity building activities such as training and workshops, experience sharing and demonstration events. Actively engage in the design of capacity building program for target clients.

6.     Ensure resources and capacity building activities address the right beneficiaries with the focus of gender equality and environmental sustainability.

7.     Prepare and submit regular progress reports, meeting proceedings and success stories.

8.     Maintain registry of project target clients in the woreda and types of project services received.

9.     Ensure the coordination of rice and vegetable interventions at woreda and community levels are met to the desired level.

10.  Ensure annual workplan activities are implemented according to the timeline while maintaining quality and ensuring integration of gender and environment themes.

11.  Assist with development of manuals, as required, in the promotion of opportunities in the rice and vegetable sectors.

12.  Provide technical field supervision for rice and vegetable interventions.

13.  Support MIM team with project baseline and annual survey activities in the woreda.

14.  Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Job Requirements

Qualification

  • A minimum of BSc degree in Business Development, Business Management, Marketing, Rural Development, Plant Science, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, Rural Sociology or related field.
  • Knowledge on Agriculture Value Chain Management and Agronomy.
  • Familiar with gender concepts and environmental mainstreaming issues.

Work experience

  • A minimum of 3- 5 years of work experience in agricultural extension service, business development support and value chain development.
  • Broad experience in capacity building and extension services.
  • Experience in working on gender and environmental issues is an advantage
  • Good knowledge of agribusiness is important.

Necessary skills and attitude

  • Energetic and passionate.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills and Motorbike license.
  • Team player with networking abilities.
  • Pragmatic and solution orientated
  • Demonstrates accountability and commitment
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work within a team
