Job Description

Background of the Organisation: Amref Health Africa – Medical Collaboration Committee (AMREF-CCM) formerly known as CCM (Comitato Collaborazione Medica) is an Italian NGO operating in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda, specialized in the implementation of health-related projects in both humanitarian and development contexts.

AMREF-CCM has conducted several interventions in Ethiopia since 1982. Most of AMREF-CCM’projects in Ethiopia – funded by institutional donors and private foundations – are mainly aimed to address the needs of vulnerable people from high migration areas, increasing access and quality of health services provided to them. Additionally, the current situation of Ethiopia and nearby countries has recently determined a high number of IDPs and refugees. In this regard, AMREF-CCM is committed to (I) ensure the emergency response to the current humanitarian crisis; and (ii) preserve the health system from a possible consequence due to the humanitarian crisis.

AMREF-CCM is set to start the implementation of 2 projects in the Fentalle Woreda of the Oromia Region as per the following titles and objectives:

“Resilience strategies for Fantalle communities” which is a project that aims to provide better nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture to end hunger and achieve food security and reach the most isolated and disadvantaged communities in Fantalle woreda by:

  • Ensuring the resilience and food security of families from 3 Kebeles (Haro Kersa, Dhebiti, Banti)  in Fantalle district
  • Increasing access to safe water in 3 Kebeles in Fantalle district
  • Improving agro-pastoral production in 3 Kebeles in Fantalle district

ZERO HUNGER – Resilience and food security of communities in Fantalle district, East Shawa Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia which is a project that aims to achieve the following Sustainable Development Goals: to end hunger, achieve food security, improve and promote sustainable agriculture. Specifically the project wants to:

  • Increase access to safe water for 80% of human and animal for 3 kebeles Harokersa, Dhebiti and Benti kebele in Fentale woreda
  • Improve hygiene habits by training and supporting 210 households to construct latrine to reduction open defecation and water related diseases in 3 kebeles Fentale woreda
  • Promote food resilience and food security of 1500 families in 3 kebeles Fentale woreda
  • Improve agro-pastoral production in 3 kebeles Fentale woreda

The WASH Technician (WT) is responsible to:

Participate in the implementation of WASH needs assessments and assessment of WASH facilities to be rehabilitated and / or build in the project

Participate in defining work specifications and reviewing quotations, and ensure the implementation and direct follow-up of activities related to the construction of WASH infrastructures in the schools and communities, such as:

  • Construction or rehabilitation of sanitation facilities (latrines, solid waste pit, soak pits, and similar).
  • Construction or rehabilitation of drinking water infrastructures (boreholes, pipe network, reservoir, drinking water treatment device).
  • Technical training of community volunteers, members of WASH committees, governmental staff
  • Control the type, quality and quantity of materials delivered to construction sites by the organization and its possible sub-contractors.
  • Monitor the use, storage and quality of the tools used by community members and workers in the site.
  • Ensure the work site organization and safety.
  • Ensure community mobilization in targeted communities on the issues related to construction, operation and maintenance of WASH facilities.
  • In the case work is sub-contracted, ensure the quality and pace of the work done by subcontractors, through field visit, site reports, and filling of monitoring sheets and sharing these with the Coordinator in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure that WASH infrastructure construction and rehabilitation works are carried out according to quality standards established by the Donor requirements through quality checklists.
  • Weekly reporting of data in order to follow up the standard project and strategic indicators (number of beneficiaries, number and type of activities completed…)
  • Weekly written and oral report for line manager,
  • Work with other team members working in the same communities, to ensure the integration and complementarity of the different sector of the intervention.
  • To perform any other work related activities as agreed with your line management

Fund: 8×1000 PdCM

Collaboration Starting date: Immediately

Length of contract: 12 months, renewable upto project phase out

Location: Field Office will be in Metehara but frequent travels within the Fentalle Woreda

Work Environment:

The WT will work in Metehara Field Office, with frequent travels to the project implementation areas and will report directly to the Project Coordinator.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Previous relevant experience in WASH, such as WASH Engineer or Assistant of atleast 2 years
  • Ability to establish strong working relationship with colleagues from different function and cultures.
  • Capacity of proactively identifying and addressing issues.
  • Demonstrated ability in community mobilisation and community-level dialogue
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Experience in working with local communities at field level in development projects
  • Experience working with NGOs
  • Relevant degree (Civil Engineer, Water Engineer or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of Amharic, Afaan Oromo and English (spoken and written).
