Samaritan’s Purse is privileged to be part of the humanitarian effort in Ethiopia and legally registered as foreign charity to work in Ethiopia since October 08, 2018.

Job Summary

Samaritan’s Purse (SP) is currently implementing WASH Program in Amhara Response, North Wollo Zone, Habru and Raya Kobo woredas, Amhara region with the objective of saving lives, accelerate recovery, and increase resiliency by providing essential medical services, protection, nutrition, shelter, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) support to vulnerable populations in the North Wollo Zone of Amhara. The WASH Officer is expected to assist the WASH Coordinator in regular planning, implementation, regular monitoring of the project as well as building relationships.

Key Responsibilities

§  Participate in field assessments and surveys in order to map areas requiring new water sources or repairs

§  Arrange and coordinate meetings with community leaders in collaboration with other WASH staff

§  Provide program support and technical advice with an emphasis on WASH and other projects

§  Maintain an overview of the WASH program(s) and of the regional context, with a view to strategically developing new projects in current sites and / or in surrounding regions.

§  Provide any technical advice that is necessary to communities.

§  Oversee any future water implementation project using community participation

§  Organize/facilitate group awareness sessions regarding hygiene practices for men/women and children in community,

§  Responsible for implementing, and monitoring  of WASH Soft activity

§   Door-to-door hygiene sessions for families

§  Participate in the distribution of hygiene kits for beneficiaries in the target area.

§  Work in collaboration with the Social mobilization teams

§   Follow – up with community base hygiene mobilizer in the community.

§   Plan the soft component activities with close coordination with the team leader

§  Documentation of specific success stories link to the WASH activates

§   Beneficiary’s registration list including men, women and children form target area. and report to line manager.

§  Training of community base hygiene mobilizers on hygiene messages.

§  Participate in Hygiene Behavior Change Communication (HBCC) sessions and awareness.

§  Check the planned hard and soft component activities are absolutely clear to the members of the community

§    Coordinate with project PM to ensure project activities are in line with SCI technical guidelines

§   Plan the soft component activities with close coordination of project PM in order to respect the planning of the proposal and ensure that the program will not face delays and/or challenges

§  Communication with the team.

§  Participate in hygiene kit distribution process

§  Identification beneficiaries for hygiene kit distribution

§  Daily oral report from activities for Team Leader every day.

§  Request materials from the store as per the need and ensure correct usage

§  Ensure there is adequate community involvement in the implementations

§  Ensure women and children’s active participation and involvement in the project implementation

§  Ensuring sites and communities are ready for the work in advance

§  Holding meetings with community leaders and members as needed to resolve problem and conflicts arise due to the program implementation

§  Ensuring all communities are given fair chance in the project as per their needs

§  Coordinate with SP’s operations department for all WASH logistical needs and making sure all movements are planned well and done appropriately

§  Maintain an oversight of WASH supplies ordered for the WASH projects, supporting the WASH and logistics staff in the coordination and quality control of WASH supplies

§  Prepare and write internal activity reports and monthly plan.

§  Provide technical guidance and support to partners on all water, sanitation, hygiene promotion related issues, to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, sustainability and impact soundness in their implementation and in accordance with Samaritan Purse policies, standards and priorities.

§  Actively participate in drafting WASH strategies, and operational plans for Samaritan Purse WASH Programme at the country level.

§   Jointly with technical staff of implementing partners and other WASH actors, update detailed needs and resource assessments and revise designs of technical plans as necessary, taking into account practical aspects of implementation, long-term sustainable solutions, and relevant technical specifications and guidelines.

§   Advise and assist the SP Programme staff on the development of WASH aspects of the Programme including planning, budgeting and input to financial management of the Programme.

§  Report regularly on WASH activity implementation, while maintaining accurate records of all relevant WASH performance indicators.

§   Prepare regular sectorial reports and submit material for preparation of periodic project monitoring reports as required by the office at country level.

§  Actively attend WASH coordination meetings at the regional level

§  Assume other duties assigned by immediate supervisor

§  Maintain a Christian witness to the communities

Job Requirements

Education / Experience Needed

§  BSc in Water Engineering, Public Health Environmental Engineering or equivalent Degree in related filed

§  Minimum three years of experience in WASH

§  Previous INGO work experience preferred

§  Fluency in English and Amharic language required

§  Ability to work effectively in a team environment

§  Computer skill in word and excel programs required

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.
