Job Description
ROLE PURPOSE:
The WASH Officer will support the implementation of WASH activities under the ABA program, ensuring effective delivery of water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion interventions at community and facility level.
This role contributes to improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services in areas facing severe shortages and public health risks.
The role holder will closely work with the respective government offices, hygiene and sanitation officers, and should quarterly assess and report on the health facility WASH coverages, communal and institutional latrine coverages and overall latrine coverage and functionality at the respective intervention woredas. He will also assess the water quality monitoring tests with integration of government office water quality teams to ensure clean drinking water at the household level. Additionally, the WASH officer will assess environmental impacts around health facilities and take appropriate measures with the coordination of health facilities’ environmental officers and hygiene and sanitation focal points to make sure the health facility environment is comfortable and hazard-free for patients and healthcare professionals.KEY
AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Programme Implementation
- Implement WASH activities including:
- Water system rehabilitation
- Sanitation facility construction/rehabilitation
- Hygiene promotion campaigns
- Ensure timely delivery of activities
Technical Support
- Conduct site assessments and technical supervision
- Ensure quality standards in construction and rehabilitation
- Support operation and maintenance of WASH facilities
Community Engagement
- Work with communities to establish WASH committees
- Support hygiene promotion and behaviour change activities
- Ensure inclusion of vulnerable groups
Monitoring & Reporting
• Collect and report activity data
• Support MEAL processes including baseline and monitoring
• Document field progress and challenges
Coordination
- Participate in local coordination meetings
- Support service mapping and data collection
- Ensure alignment with ABA processes
- Support service mapping and data collection
Safeguarding
• Ensure safe and inclusive delivery of WASH services
Promote accountability to affected population
QUALIFICATION
- Degree in Water Engineering, Environmental Health or related field
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS Essential
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in WASH programming
- Experience in emergency or development settings
- Strong field implementation skills
- Ability to work in remote and challenging environments
- Desirable
- Experience in Wag Himra or similar contexts
- Knowledge of community-based approaches
- Familiarity with humanitarian standards
