Job Description

Orbis International is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that works in developing countries to save sight worldwide.  Orbis prevents and treats blindness through hands-on training, public health education, improved access to quality eye care, and partnerships with local health care organizations in an effort to eliminate avoidable blindness.  Orbis International-Ethiopia is a legally registered Country Office of this organization, carrying out the same mission in Ethiopia.

Orbis International-Ethiopia is seeking to recruit qualified WASH – NTD Technical Assistant (TA) (4 positions) for its comprehensive WASH and NTD project activities that will be implemented in various SNNPRS, Sidama and South-West Regions.  The WASH – NTD Technical Assistant reports to the Project Manager for WASH-NTD Coordination.  The main functions consist of, but not limited to the following:

  • Carry out and implement the WASH-NTDs project plan alongside other project staff members. This will include community engagement, WASH-NTDs behavioral change interventions and health education, interactive WASH workshops, establish/strengthen WASH-NTDs coordination platforms, facilitate the ONE WASH national program implementation and WASH infrastructure development in partnership with local NGOs & the government ONE WASH program.
  • Regularly report to the line manager on all relevant matters including, but not limited to, project updates, project developments and progress, and issues such as resourcing needs, training/development, leave, work, health & safety issues.
  • Facilitate WASH-NTDs trainings, coordination platforms and health education/awareness creation sessions and interactive workshops, presenting to a spectrum of audiences including primary school teachers & principals, HEWs, HDAs, WASH service providers, Hygiene promoters.
  •  Carry out community engagement meetings and activities including discussions, meetings and mobilization in communities to encourage community led WASH-NTDs developments.
  • Establish/strengthen woreda, kebele & village WASH team/committees to monitor and maintain community led WASH-NTDs initiatives.
  • Evaluate needs for WASH-NTDs interventions at household, community and school levels,
  • Continues support to strengthen already established zonal & district level collaborative WASH-NTDs platforms with close follow-up, monitoring and supportive supervisions.
  • Advocate and disseminate the WASH-NTDs coordination tools and engagement of experts via the online training and using various communication channels.
  • Compile WASH-NTDs related information in the respective zones and share to the supervisor on a monthly basis or when required.
  • Perform any other related activities as may be assigned to her/him by his/her supervisor.

EMPLOYMENT:  For one year as of employment period with possibility of extension

Job Requirements

Qualification

  • BSc in Environmental Health, public health, hydrogeology, hydraulic and water resource management/engineering.

Work Experience:

  • At least three years of demonstrated experience in implementing, managing, and monitoring WASH-NTDs & health programs.
  • Having SBCC experience is advantageous
  • Knowledge in NTDs and WHO trachoma SAFE strategy
  • Experience in blindness prevention, trachoma, Schistosomiasis and STH elimination/control activities.

Skills

  • Good command of written and spoken English.
  • Basic IT skills particularly word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (verbal & written) required.
  • Experience relevant to carrying out WASH-NTD projects and programme’s at a community level and WHO standards
  • Experience carrying out education, teaching, awareness and training with individuals and groups of people.
  • Ability to work within and implement community development processes,
  • Ability to manage and form community processes for engagement.
  • Displays emotional maturity and resilience.
  • Proven organizational skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize workloads, stick to time schedules and meet deadlines.
