Job Highlight:

You will support national policies, strategies, and guidelines development for the improvement of road safety and the implementation of low carbon and sustainable transport, such as mass transit and non-motorized transport. You are expected to provide technical support and build the capacity of experts and decision makers. You will be supported by the WRI Africa Urban Mobility team, experts from the Global Office, and our colleagues working in our offices around the globe.

You will directly report to the Urban Mobility Project Manager for WRI Africa and the Director of Thriving and Resilient Cities for WRI Africa.

What you will do:

Project Management (45% time)

  • Support the coordination WRI Africa’s Cities program activities, including support to the Cities Program Manager, Cities Project Manager and Cities Urban Mobility Project Coordinator on the implementation of the annual work plan, reporting and budgeting.
  • Collaborate with city governments, local partners and WRI staff globally to advance the WRI Africa Cities Program and urban mobility and road safety activities.
  • Organize internal and external conferences, workshops, meetings, events, capacity building sessions and other activities related to sustainable mobility, road safety and innovative mobility solutions.
  • Manage day-to-day research and project implementation including to prepare work plans, follow up on project implementation and prepare of progress reports among others.

Research & Knowledge (45% time)

  • Support WRI Africa Cities program activities, particularly in Ethiopia on sustainable urban mobility, transport policy and strategy development.
  • Design guideline preparations related to road safety improvement, transport accessibility improvement, public transport and paratransit network mapping, integrated transport planning, speed management and air quality improvement.
  • Conduct research on road safety, public transport mapping, sustainable and innovative mobility solutions related to WRI Africa projects.
  • Provide technical support and build the capacity of experts and decision makers in the areas of sustainable mobility and road safety and introduce road safety and innovative mobility solutions to city governments and local partners, including academic institutions and non-governmental organizations and community groups.

Communications (5% time)

  • Provide content for WRI communications activities, including blogs, newsletters and the WRI Africa website.
  • Support development of reports to city governments, funders and others on WRI activities.
  • Prepare presentations and written and graphic content to presentations and reports.

Grants and Financial Management (5% time)

  • Coordinate project funding and budgets, support the drafting of grant proposals.
  • Prepare and send donor and project/grant status reports.

What you will need:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in transport planning/engineering or civil engineering or urban/regional planning or design with a focus on transportation.
  • Experience: 5+ full-time relevant work experience in urban mobility areas, including road design, road safety and public transport.
  • Experience in:
    • Carrying out workshops and trainings
    • Working with institutions and government agencies in Ethiopia
    • Conducting road safety and audits
    • Preparing technical recommendation reports related to mobility and road safety
    • Road design.
  • Languages: you will be comfortable working in both English and Amharic.
  • Requirements: You must have existing work authorization for Ethiopia.

Opportunity summary:

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Start date: Upon mutual agreement with candidate

Type of Contract: Limited-term, full time with possibility of renewal

Length of Contract: 12 months with possibility of renewal
