United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) is a global champion for women and girls, established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide. It works globally to make the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) a reality for women and girls and stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life. One of the focus areas of UN Women is supporting the implementation of the WPS agenda and ensuring equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of humanitarian action. The UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) and its subsequent resolutions form the global Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda. Built on the four pillars of participation, prevention, protection and relief and recovery, it reaffirms the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, humanitarian response, and in post-conflict reconstruction. The WPS agenda stresses the importance of women’s equal participation and full involvement in all efforts for the maintenance and promotion of peace and security, urges all actors to increase the participation of women in peacebuilding, and to incorporate gender perspectives in all United Nations peace and security efforts. It also calls on all parties to take special measures to protect women and girls from gender-based violence, particularly rape and other forms of sexual abuse, in situations of armed conflict. UN Women Ethiopia Country Office (ECO) supports the implementation of the WPS agenda in Ethiopia through partnerships with the Government and civil society and by providing technical assistance and knowledge production. As part of this work, in 2022 and 2023 UN Women ECO will publish several studies, policy briefs and reports, including, but not limited to, the following:
