Background

Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is an Ethiopian civil society organization that re-registered on September 19, 2019, before the FDRE Civil Societies Organizations Agency by Proclamation No. 1113/2019. The objectives of the Organization include increasing the participation and contribution of lawyers in the area of human rights through training and other capacity-building activities, supporting lawyers across the nation, and helping the exchange of ideas, information, and experience for better protection of human rights and prevalence of human rights, litigating strategically in courts and other relevant organs to ensure protection and promotion of human rights recognized under the FDRE Constitution and other laws, creating awareness for justice organs on international human rights instruments ratified by Ethiopia, providing free or low-cost legal services for victims of human rights violation, particularly disadvantaged communities, influencing the government to enact new laws or amend existing ones to give full protection for human rights, familiarizing the idea of human rights defenders (HRD) among the lawyers etc.

Through its work in legal aid services, transitional justice initiatives, strategic human rights litigation, and other human rights works, LHR has promoted human rights, rule of law, and accountability in Ethiopia. Much of this work takes place in demanding environments and involves engagement with complex and sensitive issues. Over time, these realities can affect staff energy, motivation, and team dynamics if not intentionally addressed.

Recognizing that staff wellbeing and team cohesion are essential to sustaining effective, ethical, and collaborative work, LHR views wellbeing as a shared organizational responsibility shaped by leadership, team relationships, communication, and everyday practices. In response to this need, LHR seeks to engage a qualified trainer to deliver a one day training on Stress Management, Burnout Prevention, and Emotional Resilience. ,

Objectives of the Assignment

General Objective

The primary objective of this consultancy is to enhance the mental health, professional resilience, and collective well-being of legal aid service providers and LHR staffs. By providing evidence-based tools and strategies, the training aims to sustain the organization’s capacity to handle demanding human rights work, mitigate the risks of secondary trauma, and foster a supportive, cohesive organizational culture.

2.2. Specific Objectives

To achieve the general objective, the trainer will be expected to:

• Equip Staff with Stress Management Tools: Provide practical, immediate techniques for managing daily work stressors and high-pressure legal environments characteristic of human rights advocacy, legal aid service provision and litigation.
• Prevent Professional Burnout: Educate staff on the early warning signs of burnout and compassion fatigue, and assist them in establishing healthy professional boundaries and sustainable work habits.
• Build Emotional Resilience: Enhance the psychological capacity of staff to engage with sensitive human rights violations and “vicarious trauma” without compromising their long-term well-being.
• Strengthen Team Cohesion: Facilitate dialogue and activities that reinforce well-being as a “shared organizational responsibility,” improving mutual support and communication within the team.
• Inform the Well-Being Framework: Utilize the training sessions to gather insights and reflections that will contribute to the development of LHR’s permanent Staff Well-Being and Team Cohesion Framework.
• Align with Strategic Values: Ensure that all well-being strategies are culturally sensitive and aligned with LHR’s core values of human rights, ethics, and justice.

Scope of the Work

The consultant is expected to:

• Prepare the session: Develop a comprehensive training agenda for a one-day session, which will be delivered for one day for legal aid providers and LHR staffs implementing different projects. Prepare all training materials (PPT presentations, and exercises). Prepare pre/post assessment tools.
• Deliver the one day training session (full day): Deliver the one-day training session for legal aid providers, staffs working on transitional justice, strategic human rights litigations and other human rights works. Use participatory, trauma-sensitive approaches. Integrate practical exercises and applied tools throughout the day.
• Use assorted Methodology such as Short presentations, Group discussions, Practical demonstrations (grounding, breathing, emotional regulation), Scenario-based reflection, Simple resilience tools adapted to frontline contexts.

Deliverables and Timeline

The Consultant shall be responsible for submitting the following deliverables within the specified timeframes:

Inception Note – A document outlining the proposed approach, methodology, and work plan, to be submitted within one week of contracting.

Training Concept and Agenda (Amharic) – A detailed concept note and agenda for the training, to be submitted prior to the training.

Delivery of Training – Facilitation of the full one‑day Self‑Care and Well‑Being Training for legal aid providers and LHR staff, on the date agreed with LHR.

Assessment Tools – Pre‑ and post‑training assessment instruments tools prior to the training.

Final Training Report – A comprehensive report including evaluation results, key reflections, and all training materials used (e.g., PowerPoint slides in Amharic), to be submitted within one weeks after the training.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Degree in psychology, social sciences, mental health, or related field with at least 5-year proven experience in delivering stress management/well-being trainings, preferably in human rights settings.
• Knowledge of human rights works.
• Strong facilitation and communication skills.
• Knowledge of stress, burnout prevention, emotional resilience tools.
