Introduction
The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the United Nations in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with governments, businesses, and civil society, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious foods for all people, especially the most vulnerable.
Background
GAIN contributes to fighting malnutrition in Ethiopia through innovative and sustainable models that increase access to safe, affordable, and nutritious foods among communities vulnerable to malnutrition. In this regard, Gain is currently implementing a project called Economic Growth through Fruit Transformation, which is working on the agro processor in collaboration with various private and government sectors. Capacity building of SMEs, which are contributing to the project especially by drying of fruit and vegetables and using the dried fruits to produce the nutritionally value-added products are the most appropriate areas to ensure the quality and safety of the product throughout the value chain of the final product.
As part of this plan, GAIN is looking to hire a consultant who will conduct an assessment to the targeted SMEs’ facilities, working environment, and overall safety status to those contributing or directly working on this project, namely, Anjonus (based in Arba Minch) and Aifa food (based in Addis Ababa), which produce dried fruit products, and TruLuv based in Addis Ababa that uses the dried fruits to enrich the granola bar. Based on the findings of the assessment, the consultant is expected to develop relevant documents such as SOP, recording format, laboratory manual, quality manual/total quality management including food safety, and HACCP procedure to those SMEs.
After finalizing the development of those relevant documents, the consultant will also develop overall training material and deliver on-site training to each SME to fill their gaps and enhance their capacity and create understanding of the relevant food safety, GHP, GMP, standard requirements, work procedures, and implementation of the established HACCP procedure.
