Term of Reference (ToR) To Provide Two Days Training on FGM, Child Marriage (CM), Sensitive Reporting, Role of Media and Advocacy Skill for Media Professionals

Background: The Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations (NEWA) is a non-partisan, non-governmental network organization established in 2003, and currently NEWA has 38-member local organizations and associations seeking to create a stronger advocacy voice for women’s advancement. NEWA has a twofold goal: synchronizing the individual activities of women’s associations into an integrated collective effort and synergy to realize their common aspirations for gender equality; and launching a vigorous public campaign of promotion, advocacy, and lobbying for women’s rights.

NEWA with the support from UNICEF is implementing a project entitled as “Empowering Women-Led Associations and Community Structures to Strengthen Grassroots and National Movements to End Child Marriage (CM), FGM, and Violence Against Children.” The project is being implemented at both the national level and across three regions: Amhara, Oromia, and Somali. The project generally aimed to build a mass movement around ending child marriage, FGM and violence through strategic engagement of women and youth-led organizations and their allies at different levels. One of the key components of the project is a capacity-building training program for media professionals, focusing on: · Increasing awareness and understanding of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and CM · Promoting effective advocacy strategies · Encouraging the media to take a proactive role in combatting FGM and CM Recognizing the powerful role of media in shaping public opinion, this training program seeks to engage multiple media platforms—including radio, television, print, and digital outlets—to champion the cause of eliminating FGM and CM. Objective of the Training

The primary aim of this training is to equip media professionals with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to effectively advocate against FGM and CM. The training will also work toward the formation of a dedicated media task force that will take an active role in advocacy efforts.

 

Specific Objectives

• Strengthen the capacity of media professionals in understanding FGM and CM and mastering advocacy techniques.
• Establish a task force of trained media professionals dedicated to FGM-related advocacy.
• Enhance the role of the media in supporting efforts to eliminate FGM and CM.

Empower media practitioners to engage in informed and sustained advocacy. The training is designed to engage a diverse group of media professionals who are actively involved in various media platforms. These participants will be drawn from both mainstream media (such as television, radio, and print) and digital platforms, including content creators on YouTube and other social media outlets. The program will include interactive sessions focused on key thematic areas such as:

• Understanding Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child Marriage (CM): its impact, cultural context, and current legal frameworks.
• Effective Advocacy Strategies: tools, methods, and messaging for media professionals.
• The Role of Media in Social Change: leveraging influence to challenge norms and promote rights.
• Strengthen journalists’ capacity in reporting on FGM, CM, and other forms of Violence against children.
• On identifying gender sensitive stories, on skills on strategies to engage in media advocacy, report women issues and FGM in the media.
• Gender and Gender-Based Violence (GBV): reporting responsibly and advocating for survivors.
