Background

IOM Ethiopia’s Emergency and Post Crisis unit responds to humanitarian needs throughout the country. After the onset of conflict in Tigray region of Ethiopia in November 2020 the team extended its operations to respond to this crisis, based out of Mekelle and Shire. IOM’s activities aim to target the most vulnerable IDPs and also to support the recovery of critical infrastructure.

Under the general supervision of the Head of Sub office and direct supervision of the Shelter Assistant, the candidate will be responsible and accountable for providing necessary support under the EPC Unit of the Mission. In particular, he/she will:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Support Shelter/NFI project implementation through field deployment to directly undertake Shelter / NFI distributions, and supervise construction works.
  • Support Shelter/NFI project implementation through field deployment to directly undertake Shelter / NFI distributions, and supervise construction works.
  • Support in coordinating the logistical needs of the Shelter/NFI program implementation including arranging material transportation, tracking material receipt, Placing storage, and delivery preparations at sites and distribution locations.
  • Carry out independent beneficiary registration and verification prior to distributions.
  • Support in recruiting, coordinating, and monitoring laborers at field sites.
  • Participate in needs assessment of disaster-affected community whenever needed.
  • Support in the distribution of tokens for identified beneficiaries based on needs assessment, notifying beneficiaries in advance to the distribution, set up distribution points, and crowd controls with security measures.
  • Support in the coordination of other Shelter/NFI activities including community mobilization and sensitizations.
  • Produce daily/weekly reports, progress reports, and related updates.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the manager.

Job Requirements

Educational Qualification

  • University Degree/Diploma in Engineering, Urban planning, Architecture, or any related technical field
  • 2 years of relevant professional work experience with 1st Degree and 4 years of relevant professional work experience with Diploma

Experience Required

  • Ample Experience in shelter program interventions
  •  Strong writing and reporting skills,
  • Familiarity in working with International Organizations, UN agencies or diplomatic missions is an asset,
  • Very good understanding of humanitarian principles
  • Good computer knowledge in MS office packages.
  • Ability to build relations with local government authorities, civil society, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently according to established structures and guidelines, including administrative requirements, and maintain coordination with colleagues and supervisor.

Languages

  • Thorough knowledge of spoken and written English and Tigrigna is required.
  • Knowledge of other languages spoken in Ethiopia is advantageous.
