About GiveDirectly
What if the most effective way to fight poverty was also the simplest: give people money and trust them to decide what they need?
Since 2011, GiveDirectly has delivered more than $1 billion in cash directly to over 2 million people living in poverty and crisis across 15 countries. Recognized as one of Time100’s Most Influential Companies of 2026, we are growing rapidly—projecting $1 billion in revenue in 2026—and scaling our technology stack to handle a 10x increase in impact.
Position Overview
Are you an experienced software engineer at a stage in your career where, above all else, you want to use your skills to do good?
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer (Fundraising) to own the critical behind-the-scenes engineering “plumbing” that keeps our fundraising running smoothly. In this role, you will delight our donors, empower our fundraising teams, securely process donations, and help transparently communicate the impact of every gift.
While you will mostly work independently alongside one other fundraising engineer, your code will directly fuel our mission to eradicate extreme poverty.
Key Responsibilities
-
Fundraising Tech & Plumbing: Build, maintain, and scale systems that handle donation processing, data pipelines, and donor engagement tools.
-
Full-Stack & Integration Work: Work across a tech stack consisting of Laravel, PHP, plain JavaScript, HTML/CSS, WordPress, Salesforce, and custom CSV/data wrangling integrations.
-
Autonomy & Ownership: Take full ownership of projects from definition, testing, and deployment to bug fixes and day-to-day progress.
-
On-Call Support: Own incident management and debugging on legacy systems during peak donation periods (such as Giving Tuesday and year-end windows).
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with non-engineers to solve messy, rapidly changing, and impact-driven challenges.
What We’re Looking For
-
Mission-Driven: A deep commitment to GiveDirectly’s mission and core values.
-
Experience: $4+$ years of professional software engineering experience.
-
Tech Stack Alignment: Genuine comfort and enthusiasm for working with our tech stack (Laravel, PHP, JavaScript, SQL, Salesforce, WordPress, and data wrangling tools).
-
Autonomous & Self-Directed: Thrives in a remote environment with minimal constraints, high ownership, and the ability to navigate ambiguity.
-
Communication: Fluent in English with the flexibility to coordinate meetings across East Africa Time and US Eastern Time zones, plus the willingness to travel internationally a few weeks a year to meet colleagues.
