About the Role
Are you an experienced finance professional looking to make an impact across Sub-Saharan Africa? The British Council is hiring a Senior Accountant (SSA Cluster 2) based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
In this pivotal role, you will lead operational financial management, tax compliance, and statutory reporting for Ethiopia and Cluster 2 countries (including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, Malawi, Mauritius, and Mozambique). Working closely with our Managed Service Provider (MSP) and reporting to the Financial Controller, you will ensure robust financial governance, accurate accounting, and seamless financial operations post-transformation.
Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Operations: Oversee retained Purchase to Pay (P2P), Order to Cash (O2C), Record to Report (R2R), and Cash & Liquidity Management (CLM) processes in alignment with IFRS and corporate policies. Support month-end/year-end closes and balance sheet reconciliations.

Tax Compliance & Statutory Reporting: Lead country-level tax reporting, local tax submissions, VAT refund applications, and statutory filings for Ethiopia and Cluster 2. Proactively identify and manage material tax risks.

Leadership & Team Management: Line manage and coordinate tasks for the in-country Accountant in Ethiopia, ensuring high standards of delivery, compliance, and professional development.

Stakeholder & Business Partnering: Act as a key finance partner to business unit leads across Cluster 2, providing guidance on MSP-supported processes and technical accounting queries.

Process Improvement: Support the implementation of updated accounting standards and the Phase 2 controllership model across the region.
Role Requirements

Education & Qualifications: Degree-level education and part-qualified status with a recognized accounting body (e.g., ACCA, CIMA, CPA, or local equivalent).

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in operational financial management, financial reporting, tax compliance, or management accounting.

Languages: Full written and verbal fluency in both English and Amharic.

Technical Skills: Advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities and hands-on experience with ERP systems (SAP experience is desirable).

Work Authorization: Must hold the legal right to live and work in Ethiopia at the time of application (visa sponsorship or relocation support is not provided).
