Who we are

SOS Children’s Villages Ethiopia is an International Non-governmental organization and a member of SOS Children’s Villages International Federation. We started our humanitarian work in Ethiopia with the opening of our first Village in Mekelle, Northern part of Ethiopia in 1974. Since then, we have expanded our programs to different regions where there are significant needs for intervention and where we believe we can work in partnership with all relevant actors to bring sustainable positive outcomes for children’s and young people.

Today, we have grown significantly to meet the persistent challenges that confront Ethiopian children who have lost parental care and those that are at risk of losing their parental care. Working in close collaboration with international donors, local government and community based organizations across seven program locations; we aspire that every child grows up with love, respect and security.

We are looking for a Roving Nurse who is responsible for providing essential day-to-day support to health and nutritional activities in health facilities and the associated communities.

Your role?

While working with us a Roving Nurse you will be in charge of the following,

  • Provide comprehensive oversight of Health and Nutrition activities within the project, ensuring their effective implementation and adherence to quality standards.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive training sessions for vaccinators, supervisors, health workers, and health supervisors, ensuring in-depth knowledge transfer on Immunization-In-Practice, effective vaccine management practices, cholera and measles management, and IMAM.
  • Offer day-to-day support and guidance to health facilities and catchment communities in relation to health and nutritional activities, including but not limited to immunization, disease management, maternal and child health, and nutrition interventions.
  • Monitor the progress and impact of activities, ensuring data collection, analysis, and reporting are conducted accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other sectors, government authorities, and relevant stakeholders to ensure effective integration and alignment of Health and Nutrition activities with broader health systems and programs.
  • Foster a close working relationship with the Health and Nutrition unit at the state Ministry of Health, actively engaging in consultations, sharing best practices, and contributing to overall health policy and strategy development.
  • Engage with health facility staff and managers, providing technical support and capacity building to enhance their skills and knowledge in Health and Nutrition service delivery.
  • Participate in regular meetings, workshops, and trainings to stay updated on the latest developments and best practices in Health and Nutrition, both nationally and internationally.
  • Contribute to the identification and implementation of innovative approaches and strategies to improve health and nutrition outcomes among project beneficiaries.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant guidelines, protocols, and ethical standards in all Health and Nutrition activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including activity reports, progress updates, and budget utilization, to facilitate effective project management and accountability.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to support efficient last-mile EPI delivery, guaranteeing the timely and accurate distribution of vaccines and supplies to Yabelo to HTR Kebeles (Health Posts).
  • Collaborate with the project team to plan and execute monthly integrated outreaches and mobile clinics in HTR areas of the Woreda, encompassing essential services such as EPI, consultations, antenatal care (ANC), family planning (FP), and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) screening.
  • Facilitate specialized training sessions for health supervisors, focusing on enhancing their proficiency in cholera and measles management.
  • Ensure the implementation of quality public health emergency response measures and integrated management of acute malnutrition (IMAM) programming, while optimizing Maternal and Young Child Feeding (MIYCN) interventions to improve health and nutrition outcomes for project beneficiaries.
  • Efficiently coordinate complicated severe acute malnutrition (SAM) referrals and gender-based violence (GBV) cases, ensuring prompt and appropriate transfers to Yabello Hospital or One Stop Center.
  • Effectively manage and document caregiver support, encompassing the provision of meals or coverage of hospital expenses for SAM complicated referrals and GBV cases.
  • Oversee fuel logistics for ambulance operations, ensuring a consistent and adequate supply of fuel

CHILD SAFEGUARDING

  • Responsible to ensure that all beneficiaries are receiving ongoing, age-appropriate verbal or written information in relevant languages about SOS Children’s Villages Child Protection Policy and Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure that all support is provided on the best interest of the child.
  • Responsible to take part in raise awareness raising sessions and capacity building trainings in relation to CS and Code of Conduct and  to prevent and protect children and young people from all forms of abuse, abandonment, exploitation, violence and discrimination
  • Support children and young people to make them understand the CS risks and protection mechanisms
  • Responsible to report any CS suspicion, concern, allegation or incident immediately, following Child Safeguarding reporting procedures. CS reports should be made to the CS team at programme level and/or to the respective line manager

Must Criteria

  • College Degree in Nursing Clinical Medicine with an emphasis on Nutrition.
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in Nutrition programs, including clinical and community-based programs, as well as other primary healthcare components (preferably in a similar context).

Competencies – Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Extensive experience in managing and implementing Health and Nutrition programs.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of health systems, disease management, maternal and child health, and nutrition interventions.
  • Proven ability to monitor and evaluate program activities, collect and analyze data, and generate high-quality reports.
  • Excellent coordination and collaboration skills, with the capability to engage with diverse stakeholders and foster effective partnerships.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective engagement with health facility staff, managers, and government authorities.
  • Familiarity with national and international health policies, guidelines, and best practices in Health and Nutrition.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills, while also functioning well within a team.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Nutrition Policy of Ethiopia.
  • Previous experience working in the Oromia region.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience delivering Nutrition and related trainings to health staff using national or WHO guidelines.
  • NGO work experience is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, especially MS-Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English and Affan Oromo.
  • Additional qualities: ability to multitask, handle pressure well, improvise, be flexible, and adapt to transitions.
