Job Description

Research Officer I – Site Coordinators – Internal/External

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit two Research Officer I – Site Coordinators who are responsible for ensuring the smooth running of Sustainable Intensification of Mixed Farming System (SI-MFS) research, scaling, capacity development and partnership establishment activities at the site and nearby agro-ecologies for which they are responsible. They will be also responsible to equally serve to the CGIAR centers (ILRI, International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT) that are implementing SI-MFS in Ethiopia

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate farmers and site selections for SI-MFS research and scaling activities;
  • Conduct regular monitoring visits within the SI-MFS operation sites and facilitate planting, data collection, surveys, etc for SI research and scaling activities;
  • Organize, participate, and assist in the delivery of training sessions, field days, cross learning visits, workshops and community group meetings;
  • Facilitate scheduling of stakeholder meetings and communication between the SI-MFS research teams and stakeholders;
  • Coordinate the delivery of any research supplies required to the project sites;
  • Supports community seed and planting material producers;
  • Support graduate students who are implementing all or parts of their theses research in the intervention sites;
  • Closely work with local partners and make sure relationship goes smoothly to speed up SI-MFS research and scaling and successfully achieve expected targets;
  • Document insights for SI-MFS research and scaling activities and share for end users;
  • Report on progress and problems to their immediate supervisors;
  • Represent ILRI, ICARDA and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT in creating strong partnership with local players;
  • Explore potential development partners and engage them in a wider scaling of SI technologies/innovations to more farmers and areas;
  • Foster cross-teams (or cross-center) coordination;
  • Capture and assess any issues or risks that may arise and report them to respective SI-MFS teams;
  • Drive project vehicles, check their mechanical status, ensure timely servicing, and report major repairs required;
  • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • Master’s degree from a recognized University in agriculture (crop and livestock), natural resources management and extension

Experience:

  • Three years of research and project coordination experience, a good knowledge on scaling approaches of SI technologies preferably with CGIAR center

Skills:

  • English speaking and writing
  • Live at/ close to SI-MFS operational sites where he/she will be assigned.
  • Familiar with the local language of the SI-MFS operational sites.
  • Driving license will add value for the position

Duty Station: Debre Birhan will be a duty town for north Shewa SI-MFS operational areas

             Hossana will be a duty town for Hadiya and Kembata Tembaro SI-MFS operational areas

Grade:  HG 13

Minimum Base Salary:  

  • Birr 37,575 per month (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment

This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa.
