Job Description

The International Potato Centre (CIP) under the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer I – Agronomy who will support research and outreach activities.

The International Potato Centre (CIP) is a non-profit international agricultural research-for-development organization with a focus on potato, sweetpotato and Andean roots and tubers. Its vision is: Roots and tubers improving the lives of the poor. CIP is dedicated to achieving food security, improved well-being, and gender equity for poor people in root and tuber farming and food systems of the developing world. CIP works with partners to contribute high quality science, technology, and capacity strengthening for sustainable science-based solutions. CIP is headquartered in Lima, Peru, with staff and activities in over 30 locations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. CIP is a member of the CGIAR Consortium. CGIAR is a global agriculture research partnership for a food secure future. Its science is carried out by the 15 research centers that are members of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Liaise with sub-grantees and partners;
  • Ensure the successful and cost-effective implementation of project activities;
  • Organize and follow up on out-scaling activities which involves procurement and distribution of planting materials;
  • Manage project funds in accordance with approved budgets and facilitates payment requests;
  • Contribute to the timely preparation of project action plans, budgets and progress reports.
  • Contribute to the development of concept notes and proposals;
  • Provide technical backstopping to partner organizations;
  • Plan and execute field activities, including well designed research, crop cuts, seed multiplication and post-harvest activities;
  • In coordination with partner organizations, plan and organize field days and promotional activities;
  • Contribute to the enhancement of seed and ware value chains of both crops;
  • Facilitate the establishment of technically and economically viable seed producer cooperatives;
  • Identify training needs, prepare, plan and implement relevant training courses and workshops;
  • Contribute to project M&E activities and report writing;
  • Identify, document and share best practices and innovations;
  • Perform any other related duties as may be required.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • Masters degree in Agriculture, Horticulture or relevant field
  • Broad / specialized knowledge of methods, techniques and processes

Experience:

  • Three years relevant experience

Additional Skills:

  • Work experience with potato and/or sweetpotato agronomy and seed production
  • Advanced level of Ms-office
  • Expertise in experimental design related to field agronomy, data collection, analysis, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal skills: ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Strong understanding of integrating gender and other social equity considerations into project design and delivery.
  • Ability to organize work and write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate effectively orally.

Duty Station:  Mekelle, Tigray

Grade:  HG 13

Monthly Base Salary:  Birr 42,084 (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment:  This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for one year with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.
