The Position: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate I position who will undertake regeneration farm management, collect characterization data supervise daily field operations and assist the research activities in the field.

General: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Job Purpose:

The forage Genebank has field regeneration sites to carry out routine regeneration and field conservation operations (Seed and seedling preparation, field planting, field management, characterization and supervision of regeneration plots and field operations).

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducts seed and seedling preparation;
  • Develops field layout, guides field planting and transplanting, maintains plots weed free and labels and collects seeds;
  • Supervises casual workers, assigns tasks, records attendance and prepares payment sheets;
  • Records monthly field observation and characterization data;
  • Assists in the management of field genebank operations, collection and analysis of field data;
  • Works independently to manage and coordinate the regeneration operations at the site;
  • Prepares herbarium specimens and maintains records;
  • Monitors plants for pests and diseases and takes remedial action;
  • Assists in general implementation of research activities, coordinating forage training activities and optimising methods and techniques at the site;
  • Manages and controls field and greenhouse working tools and equipment.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or College Diploma in plant science or agriculture
  • Knowledge in relevant field and relevant technical training

Experience:

  • BSc degree with one year work experience in farm management in forage crop cultivation is advantageous
  • Diploma with three years’ work experience in farm management in forage crop cultivation is advantageous

Skills:

  • Effective communication in English, both written and oral
  • Basic computer skills of using MS office tools
  • Good understanding of plant /forage agronomy and crop/forage seed production
  • Effective communication in English and good interpersonal skills
  • Rigorous approach to monitoring progress of tasks
  • Knowledge in relevant field and use of simple tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of handling agrochemicals/a spray certificate would be advantageous

Duty Station:  Debre Zeit, Ethiopia

Grade:  HG 10

Minimum Base Salary:  

  • Birr 15,422 per month (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment:  This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
