The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Associate I position who will carry out and oversee all forage regeneration, multiplication and characterization field activities in Sodo Field Site.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Carry out forage germplasm regeneration and multiplication at Sodo;
  • Undertake the harvesting and processing of the mature forage germplasm seeds;
  • Record monthly field observations and forage characterization data as guided;
  • Liaise with genebank database team on field data curation and retrieval;
  • Supervise and guide the field attendants and casuals working in the field site;
  • Correct herbarium specimens as deemed necessary;
  • Monitor pests and diseases in the field and takes remedial action;
  • Maintain plots weed free and correctly labelled;
  • Assists in forage training activities;
  • Assists in general implementation of research activities at the site;
  • Maintain inventory of the reagents and equipment at Sodo site;
  • Other related duties as required by the supervisor.

Academic and professional qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or College Diploma in Agriculture, Horticulture or related field
  • Knowledge in relevant field and relevant technical training

Experience:

  • BSc degree with one year work experience in farm management in agriculture field operations or seed production
  • Diploma with three years’ work experience in farm management in field operations or seed production

Skills:

  • Computer literate
  • Effective communication in English and interpersonal skills
  • Rigorous approach to monitoring progress of tasks
  • Ability to drive a motorbike will be an advantage.
  • Experience on forage crops is advantageous.

Duty Station:  Sodo, Ethiopia

Grade:  HG 10

Minimum Base Salary:  

  • Birr 18,506 per month (negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment:  This is a National Staff (NS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes a very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc. The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus in Addis Ababa. Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
