About Self Help Africa:
Self Help Africa (SHA) is an international NGO dedicated to the vision of an economically thriving and resilient rural Africa. We have 50 years of experience working with smallholder farmers, farmer associations, cooperatives and agribusinesses across Africa to help farmers grow and sell more food, improve diets, diversify incomes and make their livelihoods more sustainable and resilient to external shocks. SHA also builds awareness of issues affecting smallholders and represent their interests at policy and institutional level.
SHA is a core member of The Gorta Group which is composed of a group of innovative organizations driving sustainable economic and social change across Africa. Comprising Self Help Africa, Partner Africa and TruTrade, the Gorta Group combines expertise in market-based solutions to poverty and rural development; climate change mitigation and resilience; trade facilitation and farmer and worker rights; underpinned by an inclusive ethos that specifically targets women and youth. In August 2021, United Purpose joined the Gorta Group, which operates as Self Help Africa (SHA), bringing together two organizations with proud histories of assisting those in greatest need. United Purpose, formerly Concern Universal, has worked for more than 40 years as a leader in community-led development and grassroots innovation. SHA now has over 700 staff worldwide, as a result of the merger, and a global turnover of over €40m. We are currently implementing a portfolio of 80 projects in Bangladesh, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda and Zambia funded by a variety of institutional and private donors including the European Union, Irish Aid and World Food Programme. In 2020, we supported close to eight million people in rural communities across sub-Saharan Africa, Brazil and Bangladesh.
SHA-Ethiopia currently seeks to recruit technical support on the Rural Resilience Initiative (R4) project implemented in 16 woredas of Amhara region financed by WFP.
The goal of the R4 project is to improve food security, nutrition and livelihoods of over 54,000 smallholder farmers vulnerable to climate-related shocks. This will be realized by achieving four inter-related outcomes/components:
Component 1) Risk Reduction – improved natural resource management and disaster risk reduction through asset rehabilitation and creation;
Component 2) Risk Transfer – Assist farmers in coping and stimulating faster recovery to extreme climate events;
Component 3) Risk Retention – strengthen financial literacy, savings capacity of food insecure households; and
Component 4) Prudent Risk Taking – Enhanced smallholder access to microloans/credit and technical assistance to diversify and increase their incomes
Job Purpose:
The position holder will be responsible for integration of PGNAAP in order to maximize safety, dignity and equality, and minimize social tensions and unintended discrimination or exclusion in all project interventions as well as support mainstreaming of nutrition sensitive agriculture. The PGNAAP officer shall be responsible to ensure that PGNAAP are properly addressed as cross-cutting theme in all aspects of the R4 project implementation
Key Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of SHA country office gender and nutrition advisor and focal person for PGNAAP, the incumbent will be responsible for:
- Regularly analyzing situations/changes in the project operational context which affect the gender issues and protection risks faced by affected people, and their ability to receive information and provide feedback and comments;
- Identifying potential adjustments that the R4 project can make to maximize PGNAAP outcomes, promote gender equality and transformation, and minimize risks including protection from sexual exploitation and abuse as well as ensure nutrition mainstreaming;
- Working closely and collaboratively with the R4 project team and partners to discuss operational and implementation issues, find solutions, make recommendations and/or alert senior management for higher-level intervention and/or decision;
- Supporting implementation of gender-transformative (FLM) programming including for women’s economic empowerment;
- Supporting the capacity of staff, partners, contractors and other affiliated entities to implement PGNAAP in their work, and raise awareness on PGNAAP through marking special days such as International Women’s Day, and national holidays;
- Conduct, gender and vulnerability assessment/analysis
- Ensure regular consultation with the communities (collecting data on gender, nutrition, AAP and protection), which would support gender, nutrion, AAP and protection analysis.
- Works closely with the R4 project staff and partners, to implement and monitor project plans and activities related to PGNAAP and raise any PGNAAP issues/ concern with the project team and partners.
- Ensure rollout and compliance with SHA’s and project donor key standard operating procedures.
- Providing support for the integration of gender into the R4 project;
- Facilitate/organize different training including introducing nutrition sensitive agriculture and cooking demonstration on nutritionally dense food
- Supporting effective implementation and dissemination of information and materials such as SBCC to project target beneficiaries, and other stakeholders;
- Participate in and develop annual, quarterly, monthly and weekly implementation plans and reports for PGNAAP
- Produce education materials (printed IEC materials)
- Documenting/reporting PGNAAP activities for ad-hoc/monthly/annual reports
- Assist in timely and accurate documentation, publication and dissemination of the business development and financial literacy activities. This includes success stories, lessons learned, etc.
- Perform other duties given by her/his supervisor.

Qualifications/ Knowledge and Experience
Essential:
- BSc/BA degree in Rural Development, Development studies, gender studies, human rights, political or social sciences, or other related fields
- At least three years relevant working experience in a similar role at a senior level preferably in a conflict zone or a difficult context.
- Strong conceptual and practical understanding of gender and protection issues and approaches in humanitarian and (livelihood and Disaster Risk reduction) development contexts, including the constraints, sensitivities and risks associated with such work.
- Knowledge of the social context and challenges in promoting gender equality and equity.
- Proven experience in the provision of technical advice and effective support to field programs, and skills in staff and volunteer development, mentoring, and training
- Demonstrable understanding of gender and protection work – including when it applies to violence, abuse and harassments within organizations – and ability to implement relevant policies and activities.
- Excellent influencing and negotiation skills. The ability to work independently as well work as a team player – supporting staff and volunteers is essential.
- Proven analytical skills and strategic thinking, ability to apply professional and ethical standards to data collection and analysis processes.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Computer literacy, particularly in MS Word and MS Excel
- Ability to work independently in a timely and organized manner;
Desirables:
- Demonstrate capacity to plan, prioritize and deliver tasks on time to meet goals in a high-pressure environment;
- Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder working environments;
- Experience working in an NGO setting;
- Ability to work and act under pressure;
