Background

The Hunger Project (THP) is a global, non-profit, strategic organization committed to the sustainable end of world hunger. THP believes in a world where every woman, man and child can lead a healthy, fulfilling life of self-reliance and dignity; and works towards that goal by pioneering sustainable strategies for Gender-focused and Integrated Community Led Development, which is the process of working together to create and achieve locally owned visions and goals. The Hunger Project – Ethiopia (THP-E) is implementing projects in rural areas of Ethiopia since 2004 and currently recruiting full time staff for the following positions:

Job Summary

The Project Officer is responsible for leading the project field staff and manage the implementation, monitoring and reporting of ‘Transformative Partnership: Strengthening Civil Society for community resilience building’ project which is implemented in Mareko Special Woreda & Meskan Woreda of East Gurage Zone. Along with other duties, the Project Officer will facilitate the engagement project implementing partners including community, government & CSOs in the project initiatives. The project office is accountable to THP-E Program Manger and will execute the following duties and others to be assigned by the Program Manager.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

I. Planning

• Coordinate day-to-day project activities in collaboration with THP-E’s core and project staff and local partners.
• Conduct annual project planning and implementation as per the approved activities, budgets and donor requirements;
• Conduct local government stakeholders mapping, co-develop, and agree on a partnership modality.
• Ensure project activities are inclusive, participatory, and aligned with community resilience priorities.
• Provide direction to the project staff in aligning their weekly/monthly work plans to the project budgets and activity plans.

II. Partnership Building and Advocacy

• Lead policy researches on the issues of climate justice and food sovereignty including consultancy contract management and quality research report & policy briefs.
• Organize policy dialogue among CSO leaders, government officials and policy makers based on the policy research findings.
• Facilitate networking & collective learning workshops for CSOs on the issues of food sovereignty and climate justice.
• Provide supportive supervision to the sub-grantee CSO on the grassroot climate justice and food sovereignty advocacy.

III. Community Climate Resilience Building:

• Supervise community workshops, meetings, trainings and dialogues.
• Provide technical support to field staff in agroecology practices including but not limited to agroforestry, crop diversification, cover cropping, nutrient cycling.
• Provide technical guidance to field staff in eco livestock farming & productivity including integration of animals into natural cycles, using practices like rotational grazing, agroforestry, crop-livestock systems and breed improvement.
• Ensure fair livelihoods, food sovereignty, local traditions, and equitable access to services and resources by the project to target communities.
• Provide technical support to the field staff on women and youth entrepreneurship development including access to skills and inclusive finance.
• Ensure the implementation of THP’s safeguarding policy in project implementation.

IV. Monitoring and Reporting

• Maintain regular communication with project staff, local partners and community members to improve project performances.
• Effectively document all information related to the project including success stories.
• Compile quarterly and annual project activity and financial reports and work plans using donor and/or THP-E’s templates.
• Assist in monitoring project progress and identifying implementation challenges at project-implemented sites.

V. Finance & Material Inputs

• Ensure the financial and material utilization of the project is in line with the project plan and annual budgets.
• Ensure compliance with THP-E’s policies, donor requirement & government regulations.
• Assist in procurement of project inputs based the THP-E’s procurement policies.

Ensure transparency & accountability in all aspects of the project implementation

Job Requirements:

Requirements

• Minimum of master’s level education in Development Studies, Environmental studies, Community Development, Rural Development, Public Administration or a related field of studies.
• Minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience.
• Proven track-record of accomplishment in rural and development, natural resource management and agriculture sectors.
• Proficiency in written and spoken Amharic & English languages.
• Experience in working in teams with diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Strong communication skills and ability in facilitating dialogues.
• Proactive in providing mentorship, guidance and assistance to project staff.

• Strong report writing and documentation skills.
