  • Travel Requirement: Frequent travel to the project target woredas of Konso Zuria
  • Reports to: Zonal Program Coordinator
  • Duration: One Year with possibility of Extension
  • Functional relationship: Regional Program Manager, Education Program Manager, MEAL Manager/Director
  • Technical Liaison: Konso Zonal Education Department, Woreda Education Offices, and NRD, including other project partners

Position Summary

The Program Officer, Early Grade Numeracy, will be responsible for day-to-day implementation and technical support of the I1d–NRD Project at the school and community levels in Konso Zone. The position focuses on supporting high-quality delivery of early-grade (Grades 1–3) numeracy interventions, including classroom instruction support, teacher coaching, and implementation of research-informed instructional materials.

Working closely with teachers, school leaders, supervisors, and education officers, the Program Officer will help ensure that numeracy lesson plans, activity banks, and formative assessment tools are effectively used to strengthen learners’ sense of numbers, basic operations, and foundational mathematical thinking.

Key Responsibilities

1. Implementation of Early Grade Numeracy Interventions

  • Support implementation of early grade numeracy interventions in target primary schools.
  • Facilitate the use of structured numeracy lesson plans, activity banks, and teaching aids for Grades 1–3.
  • Ensure learner-centered, activity-based, and inclusive numeracy instruction is practiced in classrooms.
  • Support piloting, refinement, and contextualization of numeracy instructional materials.

2. Classroom Support, Coaching, and Follow-Up

  • Provide regular school-based follow-up, classroom observation, and coaching support to teachers.
  • Support teachers to apply effective early grade numeracy strategies, including use of manipulatives and formative assessment.
  • Assist teachers in addressing diverse learning levels and learning gaps among students.
  • Work with school leaders to strengthen instructional supervision for numeracy.

3. Support to Research, Monitoring, and Learning

  • Support data collection for baseline, midline, and endline assessments related to numeracy learning outcomes.
  • Assist in classroom observation, fidelity monitoring, and documentation of implementation practices.
  • Work closely with the MEAL team to ensure data accuracy, timely reporting, and learning feedback.
  • Support learning review meetings and adaptive management discussions at school and woreda levels.

4. Coordination with Government and Stakeholders

  • Coordinate closely with school principals, cluster supervisors, and Woreda Education Offices.
  • Support government participation in training, monitoring, and validation activities related to numeracy interventions.
  • Ensure program activities align with national curriculum standards and local education priorities.

5. Capacity Building and Training Support

  • Support the organization and delivery of teacher training, refresher sessions, and coaching workshops on early grade numeracy.
  • Assist in developing training materials and practical demonstrations for Grades 1–3 numeracy instruction.
  • Promote peer learning and communities of practice among teachers.

6. Reporting, Documentation, and Compliance

  • Prepare regular field activity reports, success stories, and implementation updates.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of school visits, coaching sessions, and training activities.
  • Ensure adherence to Imagine1day policies, safeguarding standards, and donor requirements.
  • Flag implementation challenges and propose practical solutions to the Zonal Program Coordinator.

    7. Safeguarding Commitment

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field (Master’s degree is an asset).
  • Minimum 5–7 years of relevant experience in education programming or teaching in NGOs
  • Demonstrated practical experience in early grade (Grades 1–3) numeracy or mathematics instruction/interventions.
  • Strong understanding of learner-centered and activity-based numeracy pedagogy.
  • Experience working with primary schools in rural or low-resource settings.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to remote schools within the Konso Zone.
