WeForest (www.weforest.org) is a fast growing international non-profit organization with headquarters in Belgium. We      develop reforestation projects to combat global warming and extreme poverty. Our mission is to conserve and restore the ecological integrity of forests and landscapes by engaging communities to implement and deliver lasting solutions for climate, nature and people.

In Ethiopia, WeForest is engaged in large-scale Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) programs in Northern Ethiopia (Amhara and Tigray regions). Through our intervention, we contribute to the country’s Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) strategy and Growth Transformation Plan. Partnerships with research institutes and universities are promoted across our interventions.

Ethiopia Program    

WeForest is active in Ethiopia since 2016. The main aim of the projects are to improve ecosystem wellbeing and to benefit local community enabling  more productive and resilient landscapes. In general, the overall program comprises with three main components: (i) ecological restoration and conservation of degraded forests and soils, (ii) livelihood improvement of local community, and (iii) capacity building, research, knowledge dissemination and scaling up best practices. Furthermore, the project focuses on gender equity and establishing strong linkages among governmental, non-governmental and private stakeholders. Since 2016, WeForest Ethiopia, with its partners restored over 15,000 ha degraded lands and engaged over 8,000 households in sustainable income generating businesses.

Our activities are growing and WeForest is now looking for a talented Data analysis and monitoring and evaluation specialist to achieve by 2030 the ambitious plan to restore up to 65,000 ha degraded forest and landscapes and to engage over 40,000 households in sustainable income earning businesses.

Role

WeForest is looking for an experienced project manager to develop, implement and monitor forest restoration and livelihood project in Amhara Region, Wofwasha national forest priority area. Working closely with Ethiopia Country Director, the project manager will manage the new FLR project in North shew zone.  The project aiming to restore over 10,000 ha covering both natural forest and degraded communal lands and support the livelihoods of over 16,000 families in the surrounding of Wofwasha forest reserve.  The new manger should work with WeForest team through engagement with smallholder farmers, private business sectors, local government and NGO’s to develop, implement and mainstream long-term, sustainable and scalable forest landscape restoration technologies in the region.

Responsibilities include:

  • Project management, coordination, monitoring & evaluation, reporting and partnership
  • Day to day follow-up of WeForest program in North Shewa, Wofwasha Forest restoration project
  • Develop project logfram, annual activity plans and ensure all project outcomes, outputs achived effectively as stated in the documnet and logfram
  • Oversee planning, budgeting and implementation of the project
  • Liaise with local, district and national authorities as required and communicate accordingly
  • Engage with forest-dependent communities
  • Efficient and effective communication with WeForest Ethiopia Country Director, WeForest local team, local communities, government and non-government offices
  • Efficient and transparent weekly and quarterly reporting to Ethiopia Country Director
  • Prepare quarter,  biannual and annual report of the project according to the regional, national and HQ formants and procedures
  • Review/ perform project risk analysis for the project biannually and develop adaptive strategies
  • Evaluate weekly staff progress report and monitor achievements and improvements
  • Represent WeForest in meetings and events as needed
  • Support the Head office team in Addis for other projects in the region and beyond

Finance and Administration tasks

  • Supervise and make sure project’s financial reports are delivered on time to WeForest Ethiopia head office  (expenses summary, Balance Sheet and Cash flow statements, bank statements, and budget analyses)
  • Review the multiyear project budget in collaboration with the team
  • Day to day follow-up on all financial transactions of the projects
  • Contribute in Project planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation process of the project
  • In coherence with WeForest’s head office, review the relevant HR policies and procedures in accordance with rules and regulation of the regional government
  • In close collaboration with Ethiopia Country Director, recruit and develop capacity of local team

Technical leadership

  • Support the management plan development of Wofwasha forest in collaboration with Amhara National Regional State Environment, Forest and Wildlife Protection and Development Authority (EFWPDA)
  • Develop and lead socio-economic and ecological resource assessments and monitoring in project area(s)
  • Develop best FLR practices in the  project areas and scale-up to other projects and beyond (e.g. ANR, Farmer managed natural regeneration, soil and water conservation practices, Agroforestry etc)
  • Liaise with office of Agriculture and EFWPDA in planning and implementation of all FLR project activities in the project area
  • Lead  the livelihood programs in consultation with, WeForest team, communities, local stakeholders and local/national/international businesses sectors, oversee value-chain development for non-timber forest products (incl. beekeeping)
  • Assisting with communication of research results and best practices to partners and communities
  • Coordinate and facilitate adoption of Forest Management Plan and development of local forest bylaws
  • Organise training for, experts, development agents and farmers at regional and district levels

Programme development

  • Develop new forest restoration projects in the region in collaboration with WeForest Ethiopia head office and HQ Belgium
  • Develop, review project logframe and overall strategies of WeForest FLR programs in the region and support the country program

Terms & Conditions

Start date: As soon as possible

Duration of Contract: Three year, with potential to extend subject to performance and funding availability.

Probation Period: 3 months

Location: Debrebirhan, Ethiopia, with significant travel in rural area

Working hours: Full-time, working Monday through Saturday morning, up to a maximum of 44 hours per week. Hours will vary depending on project needs and flexibility is essential.

Job Requirements

Essential:

  • An M.Sc., or equivalent experience in Forestry, Natural resources economics, Environmental science, Forest ecology and conservation, Rural development, Forest and environment policy or from related disciplines
  • Fluent in English (both speaking and writing)
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience  in management, project planning, and project development programs, preferably in Amhara region
  • Demonstrable experience of implementing FLR projects,  livelihood value chains in collaboration with local stakeholders, farmers, communities and business sectors
  • Excellent management, coordination, training, reporting and communication skills
  • Flexible in terms of traveling and living conditions
  • Excellent team player
  • Ability to develop and manage complex budgets
  • Experience in developing new projects, developing log frames, work plans and delivering projects against milestones and targets
  • Ability to use and understand GIS and other basic natural resources monitoring software

Desirable:

  • Track record in project development, management and implementation
  • Track record with gender-sensitive participatory, governance and inclusion approaches
  • Track record in grant applications
  • Track record in writing scientific articles
