Job Description

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks to recruit a Project Manager who will perform a coordinating role for IWMI’s Water Productivity through Open access of Remotely sensed derived data (WAPOR) program and potentially other programs in the Digital Innovations. They will forge an enabling environment among project team members, implementation partners, and key stakeholders for timely delivery of the project outputs. His/her duty station will be at the IWMI-East Africa office, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is a non-profit international research organization, serving a global mandate to improve the management of water and land for food, livelihoods and nature. IWMI’s headquarter is located in Colombo, Sri Lanka and one of its sub-regional offices is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. IWMI is one of the 15 research centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Key Responsibilities:

The specific responsibilities and duties of the Project Manager shall be to:

  • Assist the project leaders in the different areas of the project management life cycle to be undertaken across multiple geographies;
  • Support the project leaders by keeping on track country work plans and activities for IWMI researchers and consultants;
  • Contribute to preparing accurate and timely project reports and ensure consistency across information presented to stakeholders;
  • Create a project-management calendar and track project portfolios, outputs, progress-reporting updates, and overall project progress, including deliverables, and provide administrative support to the Project Leaders to ensure that agreed timelines are adhered to;
  • Monitor the ongoing program plans, budgets, progress, highlight potential risks to program delivery and provide solutions where applicable;
  • Organize, facilitate, attend, and participate in meetings, prepare meeting minutes and ensure follow up on necessary actions and decisions from meetings with project teams and implementing partners for effective coordination and planning;
  • Support team members in preparing presentation material and translating research material in products for a broader audience (e.g. blogs, briefs, manuals, guidelines);
  • Develop and coordinate data-gathering and monitoring systems to maintain rigorous quality standards;
  • Assist in coordinating and monitoring partnerships with government and international development partner agencies and wider stakeholder engagement in the African, Middle East and Asian regions;
  • Ensure that enquiries and correspondence to the Project Leader are responded to in an appropriate and timely manner.

Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of agriculture, environmental science, climate change, policy or other scientific discipline relevant to water resources for multiple sectors.
  • Project Management certification – desirable
  • Broad / specialized knowledge of methods, techniques and processes

Experience:

  • Seven years professional experience, work experience in different geographies, including at least 4 years of demonstrated experience in project coordination and management processes with international organizations or other development partner;
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely manner;
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills, particularly when preparing correspondence and briefings;
  • Demonstrated experience in using smartsheets, teams and other platforms for effective team coordination and project monitoring;
  • Demonstrated familiarity with social media and the ability to use such media to promote inter-office communications and information sharing.

Preferred

  • Prior experience in water management, agriculture or climate change with international organizations.

Skills:

  • Problem solving mindset and great organizational capacity across multiple projects and geographies;
  • The ability to effectively establish priorities and plan, organize, implement and monitor work activities with limited supervision;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment, with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
  • Demonstrated skills in using project management software;
  • Demonstrated skills in employing facilitation methods for participatory decisions and shared visions with stakeholders;
  • A high level of proficiency in using MS Office and other computer software;
  • Able to deal with sensitive and confidential information in a professional manner;
  • Personal attributes that include high standards of conduct, respect, flexibility, and sound work ethic;
  • Experience of preparing scientific information and paper;.
  • Experience of building and sustaining relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Effective listening skills, and excellent verbal and written communications skills in English.
  • Fluency in French is an asset.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Job Grade: HG 15

Monthly Base Salary: Birr 63,502 (Negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate)

Terms of appointment:  This is a National Staff (NS) position. The initial appointment is for three years.
