Result of Service

The long-term goal of this project is to enhance income generation and soil restoration in peri urban areas through agroforestry-based sustainable production. The project will be implemented in the peri-urban areas of Semera, Hawassa, Jimma and Bahir Dar, and three selected coffee growing districts adjacent to Hawassa and Jimma. The results of the project will be analyzed to allow potential replication in other areas. In general, the project will focus on urban greening, coffee value-chain development, and building the capacity of decision makers to enhance integrated land management.

Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Setting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Addis Ababa Office is a liaison office to the African Union (AU), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and Ethiopia, whose aim is to facilitate the participation of UNEP in the provision of inter-agency support to regional institutions and processes. As an accredited entity to Ethiopia, it is a member of the UN Country Team and works with national environmental institutions. UNEP is also mandated to enhance public awareness on environmental issues in Ethiopia by successfully organizing and developing environmental outreach programmes, as well as by mobilizing adequate resources to enhance its programme of work in Ethiopia.

Under the overall guidance of the Director General, Ethiopian Forestry Development, and with direct supervision by the Lead Executive, Green Legacy and Plantation Forest- EFD and direct supervision of the Head of UNEP ROA Liaison Office in Addis Ababa, the Project Coordinator will specifically be responsible for:

– Overall project implementation and coordination with all concerned stakeholders to ensure satisfactory project implementation. PC will pay particular attention and provide guidance to the proponents and actors.
– Support the design and implementation of capacity building activities for all actors targeted.
– Supporting both Implementing Partners in development and submission of bi-annual narrative reports and quarterly financial reports.
– Proactive and satisfactory management and supervision of implementing partners for strategic purposes for the project, with full administrative support from the UNEP Addis Ababa Office.
– Taking adequate follow-up measures for obtaining the expected results as per the project document.
– Reporting on project implementation progress to EFD, UNEP Addis Ababa Liaison Office and Project Steering Committee.
– Scheduling Project Steering Committee Meetings as foreseen in the Project Document.
– Maintain continuous communication with focal points, project partners, including UNCCD, UNEP and Implementing Partners.
– Perform other duties as required for effective implementation of activities to realize project objectives.

Qualifications/special skills

  • Master’s degree in Forestry, development, environmental management, environmental economics or related field is required.
  • A first level university degree in a combination of additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master’s degree.
  • Prior experience of coordinating projects is required..Prior experience working with agroforestry-based sustainable production is required.
  • Excellent writing and proficient communication skills.
  • Experience of writing narrative and financial reports in English is a required
  • Prior experience in working with International Organisations, Non-governmental Organisations, Civil Society Organisations etc. is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English required.
  • Knowledge of the local language (Amharic) and another official United Nations language is desirable.
