Job Description


The Mental Health Service Users’ Association (MHSUA) is an association of mental health care users in Ethiopia, founded in December 2018 and run by people with mental health lived experience. MHSUA strives to ensure that persons with mental health conditions in Ethiopia are engaged meaningfully in the health care system focusing on human rights, empowerment, recovery, and peer support.

The key issues that the MHSUA seeks to address are to increase community awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and support people with lived experience to live in dignity, empower service users and their families to be their own advocates in the development and improvement of mental health care.

We are looking to recruit an experienced full-time programme coordinator who will help oversee and implement MHSUA programmes and activities.

We are looking for a motivated individual who is passionate about mental health, and excited at the opportunity to play a central role within a dynamic and growing organisation that is becoming a key player in Ethiopia’s mental health sphere. The ideal applicant will welcome the challenge of expanding MHSUA’s activities and impact, in order to make significant positive change in mental health policy and services and ensure that the voices of persons with lived experience are incorporated at every level.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Proposal writing
  • Project management: Designing, planning, and implementing activities
  • Coordinating activities and relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • Coordinating MHSUA’s communication outlets
  • Representing the Association at events and meetings
  • Reporting to stakeholders
  • Financial management for events and projects. Working closely with MHSUA’s admin and finance officer.

Contract: This position is for 1 year and can be extended pending funding availability

Job Requirements

Required skills and experience:

  • Interest, awareness, and sensitivity regarding mental health
  • Bsc/BA degree in Social Sciences, project management
  • At least 2 years of project management experience in NGO setting
  • Experience In proposal writing
  • The ability to communicate and write reports in English and Amharic
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Takes initiative and excited to contribute to MHSUA’s values and mission

Desired skills:

  • Interest in contributing to the mental health sector
  • Willingness to travel inside the country
  • Strong analytical skills and good managerial practices
  • Hands on experience in budgeting and reporting
  • The ability to be flexible working with the team
  • Being empathetic, understanding, and having good listening skills
