ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

This job is found in WFP Ethiopia Country Office, Dessie SO. Job holder reports to Dessie SO Programme Head under the general guidance of the Head of SO. S/he will work closely with the WFP Bahir Dar Area Office activity five (Activity 5 -Provide nutrition-sensitive social protection, climate risk management services, and capacity strengthening support for smallholder farmers, pastoralists, refugees, and returnees most vulnerable to climate shocks) technical staff for the day-to-day operational matters. At this level, the job holder demonstrates responsibility and initiative to respond independently to queries with the general guidance of the Head of programmes. There is a requirement to use judgment in dealing with unforeseen problems on a daily basis. The job holder typically is responsible to manage and effective implementation of all activity five components in areas under the responsibility of Dessie SO.

JOB PURPOSE

To provide effective coordination and specialized/technical support/ to a full range of policy and programme activities that effectively meet the objectives’ of rural resilience and livelihood interventions.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the general supervision of Dessie SO head of programs and technical support by Bahir Dar Area Office Activity 5 (Provide nutrition-sensitive social protection, climate risk management services and capacity strengthening support for smallholder farmers, pastoralists, refugees and returnees most vulnerable to climate shocks)  technical staff, the program assistant will be responsible for the following activities:

• Serve as a focal point for WFP Dessie SO for all initiatives under Activity 5 in the Eastern part of Amhara region;
• Liaise with government counterparts, CPs, FSPs, and other stakeholders on all technical aspects related to Activity 5 initiatives;
• Coordinate on-ground implementation of Activity 5 actions in the Eastern part of Amhara region;
• Support capacity strengthening activities at regional and local level falling under Activity 5;
• Coordinates the establishment of various local partnership forums to facilitate learning and scaling up of good practices relevant to WFP and activity 5;
• Maintain up to date information and provide timely information as required;
• Coordinate needs assessment missions and data analysis;
• Identifies good practices related to Activity 5 for further program quality improvement;
• Collect, document, and share lessons learned and results of Activity 5 actions implementation;
• Supervise field monitors for strengthening/building their technical and functional capacities on thematic areas related to Activity 5 (climate change adaptation, resilience building, DRR/DRM, etc.);
• Organize missions for WFP ETCO, donors, and other partners;
• Assist in the design of new Activity 5 initiatives for the Amhara region; and
• Perform additional works assigned by WFP Dessie SO.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of secondary school education. University degree in International Development, Development Studies, Agricultural Economics, Economics, Natural Resource Management, Cooperative Studies, Social science or other relevant fields.

Experience: Five years of work experience in food security, resilience building, climate change adaptation, or other relevant fields

Language: Proficiency in both oral and written communication in English and the local language is a requirement.
