IFDC is a public international organization active in 27 countries in Africa, Asia, and America. These approaches are needed to boost soil health and crop productivity while reducing the environmental impact of fertilizer use. IFDC translates research into action by using locally driven, environmentally sound, and impact-oriented solutions. The Transform Soil Fertility Management in Ethiopia (TRANSFORM) program, funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the European Union, is a four-year initiative (2025-2028) aimed at enhancing soil fertility and agricultural resilience in Ethiopia by addressing critical challenges such as nutrient depletion and soil acidity. With the goal of rehabilitating 65,000 hectares of farmland and strengthening the capacity of 100,000 small-scale producers, the program consists of four interrelated components: (i) provision of customized soil fertility extension services designed to enhance farmers’ technical knowledge, decision-making capacity, and adaptive management skills; (ii) development of a vibrant and efficient soil input sector to ensure the reliable availability and accessibility of high-quality soil amendments and fertilizers; (iii) strengthening of research-extension interfaces through participatory, farmer-led action research that promotes context-specific and evidence-based innovations; and (iv) creation of an enabling policy and institutional framework that supports coordinated, integrated, and sustainable soil health and fertility management in Ethiopia.
Implemented through a consortium led by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) in partnership with Wageningen University and Research – Wageningen Environmental Research (WUR-WENR), ISRIC – World Soil Information, Environment and Coffee Forest Forum (ECFF), and SOS Sahel Ethiopia, the TRANSFORM program, together with Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Regional Bureaus of Agriculture (RBoAs), the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), and other government institutions and partners, aims to institutionalize sustainable soil fertility and land management practices, thereby contributing to a resilient, productive, and climate-adaptive agricultural system in Ethiopia.
